Melamine Foam Basotech Polyurethane Foam

Melamine or Basotech is one of many polyurethane materials on offer from Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd. Within the industry it may be called Melamine foam, Basotect foam, Melamine Basotect foam or Melamine Polyurethane foam. As with many other PU foams, Melamine foam is manufactured in jumbo or master blocks (buns), at 2500mm long x 1250mm wide x 500mm thick, which are held in stock ready to be split into sheets or split and joined to produce melamine PU foam rolls.

Our in-house state of the art conversion facilities enable us to be able to produce and supply sheets and rolls of Melamine PU foam in thicknesses from as little as 1.5mm. We also have a range of presses, log cutters and bandsaws which allows us to further convert melamine PU sheets or rolls into finished cut parts such as gaskets, strips, tapes, pads or washers, supplied plain, coated with one of many foils or self adhesives or even laminated to other materials.

What Is Melamine Foam Basotect Polyurethane Foam?

Melamine or "Basotect" foam is a low density, open cell PU foam, formulated from melamine resin (a duroplastic synthetic material), creating a light weight, flexible and very soft material, available in a range of colours ranging from very dark grey, to white each suited to different applications.

Melamine Basotech foam is possibly most likely recognised as the material used as the ‘magic sponge’, which was known to clean and remove stains without the need for detergents thanks to its porous cell structure and abrasive nature. However, traditionally found used within HVAC, ductwork and sound proofing applications.

Why Use Melamine Basotect Polyurethane Foam?

There are a number of reasons why Melamine Basotect foam is a high quality material for use in many applications and industries. Its abrasive nature makes it excellent for use in cleaning surfaces such as glass, tiles and ceramic hobs and it can be used in high temperature applications reaching up to 240°C and is naturally flame resistant even without additional additives.

Melamine Foam can be found used within many industries including building & construction in the form of acoustic and thermal insulation panelling in studios and theatres or used with machinery and marine equipment. As well as insulation application it is also widely used within the HVAC industry to create air conditioning or ventilation components which can be precisely cut for a perfect fit even on curved surfaces.

Benefits Of Using Melamine Basotect PU Foam

    • Open cell structure allowing for water absorption
    • Abrasive properties
    • Flame resistance
    • High sound and thermal insulation properties
    • Lightweight
    • Heat endurance

Other Grades of Open Cell PU Foams Available:

Polyester - this material has an open cell structure suited for use as filtration media for sound - ideal for speaker panels.

Polyether- is made up of large open cells which allow for airflow without retaining moisture, making it perfect for use as filtration foams, aquarium foams and marine equipment.

Class O Acoustic - is found used in many acoustic and thermal insulation applications within building and construction industries. It can also be used in heating and ventilation applications where a fire rated material is essential.

Reticulated Foam - recognised by its fully open cellular structure and appearance, which is ideal for air and liquid filtration, even when used with mild acids and alkalis, fuel, organic chemicals, oils, lubricants and detergents. Available in 10ppi 20ppi 30ppi 45ppi 60ppi 80ppi (pores per inch).

The Advantages of Using Melamine Basotect Foam

Melamine Basotect foams are highly durable and can be used in a broad spectrum of applications and industries, including cleaning pads, thermal insulation, sound absorption and insulation and filtration components within the HVAC industry. This foam is very light weight which makes it ideal for fitting to walls and ceilings within buildings and also as interiors on trains and aerocraft.

It is suitable for very high temperature applications - remaining stable even at 240⁰C and is naturally flame retardant without the need for further additives during the compounding process. Melamine Basotect Polyurethane Foam is manufactured as standard in a block size of 2500mm long x 1250mm wide x 500mm thick, which can be split down and supplied in sheets from as little as 2 or 3mm, then pressed or sawn in components such as pads, washers , strips or gaskets, fabricated into bespoke shapes to perfectly fit obscure spaces all supplied in a plain or self adhesive option - available in several shades of grey and white to be physically more attractive when placed in position.
