Natural Cork Pads

Natural Cork Pads

ASG stock, supply and convert a range of cork materials, one of which includes a natural cork. Natural cork is manufactured in standard thicknesses in sheet and roll forms (depending upon the material thickness required), which can be converted into a range of usable products including pads, supplied with a choice of plain or self-adhesive finishes and even laminated to one of our other materials.

Our cork pads are produced on-site using drawings or measurements provided by our customers, ensuring the final product is to their exact specification.  Depending upon the size and quantity of pads required, one of many presses, bandsaws or CNC machines can be used to manufacture the final product, from one-off samples to multiple batch runs.

What are Natural Cork Pads?

Natural Cork consists of grains of cork compressed together either with a liquid binder. Natural cork is environmentally friendly and relatively cheap compared to sponge and rubber and can be used as a simple coaster, air, dust, water seals, in thermal insulation, acoustic and anti-vibration applications.

Cork pads are cut from stock sheets or rolls, often used in the same way as gaskets to create seals between uneven surfaces and fill irregularities.  As we made all our pads to order, we can produce them as squares or triangles with the option of radius corners, and also as circular or oval-shaped pads or ‘discs’, in a range of thicknesses.

Manufacturing pads in-house allows us to supply the finished product in a plain or self-adhesive backed finish and even laminated to other materials to create unique material variations.

    Product Specification & Key Characteristics

Natural cork pads as the name states are natural in colour, lightweight and have some flexibility. This material is impermeable to liquids and gases, meaning it is an excellent sealing material and therefore resistant to moisture damage and decay.

Natural cork is a great material for use in thermal, acoustic and vibration insulation applications, providing protection against varying temperatures and chemical or odour contamination.

Cork pads can be supplied in specifically cut sizes, laminated together to produce non-standard thickness, laminated to other materials for added properties and used in prototyping to cut and manipulate to create the correct shape and sized functioning pad.  For more information about the advantages of cork pads please get in touch.

    Why use Natural Cork Pads?

Natural cork pads can be used in many industries and are popular thanks to their number of excellent properties including being lightweight, can withstand high pressure without degrading and is highly tear-resistant. This material is a cheaper alternative to some sponge and rubber gaskets with high mechanical strength, a working temperature range of -80°C - 140°C and is excellent for water and gas sealing applications even when used outdoors.

Natural cork pads have a wide range of uses from a basic coaster through to gaskets within fuel tanks, the material is chemically inert, doesn’t absorb odours, has thermal, sound and vibration insulation properties therefore often utilised within the automotive industry and as a base material under heavy plant machinery, pumps and compressors to reduce noise and vibration levels.

    Benefits of Natural Cork

    • Sound Suppression
    • Thermal Properties
    • Bonded with other materials based on application
    • Anti-Vibration
    • Resistance to weathering
    • Easy to cut/convert
    • Non-toxic and safe to work with
    • Resistant to mould growth
    • Aesthetically more appealing than some rubber alternatives

    Different Grades of Cork Available

Along with natural cork, there are other different grades of cork used to produce pads,  each with its own unique characteristics, depending upon the material it is blended.  Grades of cork include Neoprene Bonded, Nitrile Bonded and Resin Bonded

Neoprene bonded cork is suited to sealing at higher temperatures and resistant to weathering and oil.  Neoprene Bonded cork is suited to oil, engineering, electrical, anti-vibration and soundproofing applications.

Resin-bonded cork – a lightweight, flexible cork, produced using cork granules bound together using a synthetic resin.  This grade of cork is resilient to certain acids and is often used in water retaining applications.

Nitrile bonded cork – manufactured using a combination of cork and nitrile rubber granules, giving a speckled appearance.  Gaskets made from this material can be used where oil and fuel resistance is required, or where high-temperature resistance is required, industries include automotive and general engineering.
