Cut strips are one of ASG’s most manufactured products, many of which are made using a range of sponge, foam and rubber rolls of material, however we also stock bespoke and specialist fibre, resin, plastic and paper based materials designed for use within electrical applications, which can also be converted into strips (such as kapton electrical insulation strips) and tapes, sometimes also called also recognised as insulation tapes, isolation strips or electrical tape.

One material from our electrical insulation range is Kapton, a polyimide film perfect for use in applications which require outstanding thermal, mechanical, chemical and electrical properties. Kapton films are stocked in roll form and in thicknesses from 23 to 125 micron, and supplied in lengths ranging from 5 meters to 50 meters, however are manufactured in jumbo rolls of up to 914 meters, depending on thickness and at 610mm wide all of which can be cut down into strips, supplied plain or laminated with an adhesive coating prior to being cut.

Kapton Electrical insulation strips are all made to order, manufactured by our highly skilled workforce, using state of the art machinery including band saws, strippers, log cutters and even presses depending upon the size and quantity required. In-house production allows us to closely oversee the whole production process to ensure that we consistently produce high quality, competitively priced strips.

    What Are Kapton Electrical Insulation Strips?

    Strips are pre-cut pieces or lengths of material, in this case Kapton film. These strips can be cut into pieces just a few millimeters wide, and in any length upto the full length of the roll or sheet of raw material.

    They can also be supplied in loosely cut strips, supplied kiss cut on a roll or supplied as a roll or coil which can be cut down by the customer or end user into lengths as and when required. Kapton electrical insulation is a polyamide film, which can also be recognised by its chemical name ‘poly 4,4'-oxydiphenylene-pyromellitimide’ - this film is produced using (PMDA) pyromellitic dianhydride and 4,4’ oxydiphenylamine (ODA), which produces the Amber coloured film found used in many extreme temperature electrical insulation applications on items such as circuit boards, transformers, motors and fiber optics.

    Why Use Kapton Electrical Insulation Strips?

    Strips of Kapton and other electrically insulating materials are designed to make electrical devices and appliances safe to use. Kapton Films are manufactured in roll form in a range of standard thicknesses and lengths, which can be easily cut down in strips and tapes in bespoke sizes made to order. Kapton strips are used to provide a barrier, restricting the flow of electrical current, protecting electrical conductors from coming into contact with people or tools during installation, maintenance or whilst the device is being used.

    Kapton electrical insulation strips also prevent electrical arcing (electrical current flows through the air between two conductors, as a result of the electrical breakdown of gas that produces an ongoing electrical discharge). As well as having excellent electrical insulation properties, Kapton also demonstrates temperature stability, flame and chemical resistance and mechanical strength. This high quality material with its unique property combination makes for the perfect material to use within aircraft and aerospace applications.

    Epoxy Glass - a green coloured material with good mechanical strength, good chemical, electrical and radiation resistance, low moisture absorption and a working temperature range of upto +120℃.

    Valox - Valox electrical insulation offers dielectric strength, electrical properties, an operating temperature range of -40°C to 130°C and resistance to a wide variety of chemicals including hydrocarbons, dilute acids and bases, detergents and aqueous salt solutions. Valox materials like other plastics offer high-strength and impact resistance, good flexibility, and a resistance to shrinkage.

    Leatheroid - is a grey/blue coloured paper gasket material, also sometimes called Elephantide. This material is used within the electrical industry to insulate hot elements.

    MICA - is a mineral based sheeting material which has excellent mechanical performances, is resistant to chemicals and provides electrical and therm insulation. MICA gaskets are often used to replace asbestos as they can withstand extremely high temperatures of up to 1000℃.

    MYLAR is an extremely strong, flexible polyester film. MYLAR is an excellent insulation material with dielectric strength, moisture resistance and is an excellent insulation material.

    Nomex can be manufactured using nomex paper or nomex board, it can withstand high temperatures, has high mechanical and dielectric strength, and is an excellent insulation material for all kinds of electrical equipment and applications.

    Presspahn is a brown-coloured material, manufactured using kraft wood pulp. Presspahn sheets have excellent physical and mechanical properties, generally used as electrical insulation.

    SRBF is resin-bonded fibre material which is tough and rigid, with an operating temperature of 120℃, low water absorption and is resistant to wear, and impact chemicals.

    SRBP (synthetic resin bonded paper) is manufactured using layers of paper and synthetic resins. This material is suited to high and medium-voltage applications. SRBP has good mechanical and excellent electrical insulation properties, with low water absorption.

    PTFE is a non-conductive plastic material used to produce electrical insulation sheets. PTFE sheets are suitable for high-temperature applications and have a high melting temperature. This material has excellent dielectric properties and can often be found used in circuit boards.

    PVC is a tough, lightweight abrasion, chemical and moisture-resistant material which has good dielectric strength making it a great material to use for electrical insulation applications.

    The advantages of using Kapton films come in the form of its outstanding performance, and the number of advantageous properties the film possesses, making it a high quality material ideal for some of the most demanding environments.

    Strips cut from rolls and sheets of Kapton electrical insulation films are often found utilised within aircraft, aerospace, rail and automotive applications, where properties such as mechanical strength (resistance to abrasion, tear and puncture), high dielectric strength, chemical resistance and fire resistance are crucial.

    Kapton polyamide films are highly durable, capable of maintaining it’s mechanical properties and withstanding vibration and extreme temperature ranging from -269°C through to +400°C. Katon Films are manufactured in a number of grades with varying levels of resistance, each of which can further be converted using our state of the art on site facilities where we can produce finished strips and tapes in a plain or self-adhesive backed finish.
