Reconstituted Polyurethane Foam Gasket

Gaskets cut from Polyurethane materials are just one of thousands of products available from Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd in a choice of colours and grades in  both foam and solid variants.   One type of PU gaskets produced and supplied by ASG are those produced using reconstituted polyurethane foam.  Reconstituted Polyurethane foam is known by other names within the industry including ‘recon’ foam, crumb foam or chip foam, recognisable by its multi-coloured appearance and rough, fuzzy texture.  Reconstituted PU foam in its raw state is manufactured in very large master blocks or ‘buns’ usually around 2 metres x 1.5 metres in size and over 1 metre in height, which are held in stock ready to be carved and split into sheets or split and joined into rolls from which gaskets can be cut.

Reconstituted foam gaskets are manufactured using drawings or samples provided by our customers, with whom we work closely to ensure the final product is to their exact specification providing samples where needed.  From a simple square picture frame gasket, to a more complete profile with cut-outs, notches or bolt holes - we can offer a solution. Whether it’s a one off sample or a multi-thousand run, we have a machine to quickly and accurately produce perfectly formed recon foam gaskets in a range of sizes, these include various types of presses, CNC and kiss cut machines.

Our recon foam gaskets can be produced plain or with a choice of finishes including foils, self adhesives or laminated to other materials, depending on the size and quantity of the gasket, they can be supplied as loosely packed parts, or kiss-cut on rolls for quicker and easier application.

What are Reconstituted Polyurethane Foam Gaskets?

Chip foam or reconstituted Polyurethane (PU)  foam is a recycled material produced using a mixture of various grades of polyurethane foam off-cuts and trimmings which would have otherwise been discarded.   The mixture of discarded foam is fed through a large shredder which chips the material down into small  pieces,  which are then compressed and bonded together producing a huge multi-coloured block of material, which can be cut down into  sheets or used to convert into finished pads.

Recon from gaskets can take the form of strips, pads or intricately cut pieces of material placed between two surfaces to fill gaps and to create a low pressure seal preventing the leakage of liquids or gas and to seal against the intrusion of dust and debris when under compression.  Poron sponge creates gaskets which are high density and flexible designed to offer low outgassing, non-fogging and non-corrosive properties. Poron gaskets can be cut from various grades of sponge from very soft that are easily compressible and offers enhanced sealability to the firmer grades which are able to manage high energy impact. There is also a slow recovery grade for applications that require a low closure force.

Why use Reconstituted Polyurethane Foam Gaskets?

Gaskets cut from reconstituted foam are often taken for a number of reasons - the material itself is affordable,  compact, highly resistant and most of all good for the environment as it is recycled and the material would have otherwise ended up in landfill sites!!!  Recon foam gaskets can be cut from rolls or sheets of material and be used in applications where there will be repeated use and impact such as seat cushions in pub benches, public transport, the production of gym mats and also in  packaging or noise and vibration reduction applications.

Reconstituted  foam  gaskets are available in different weights, usually between 4lb and 14lb suited to varying levels of use.  Prior to cutting or pressing into gaskets, recon foam sheets can be laminated with a choice of foils and self-adhesives applied to one or both faces.  For very thick sheets or where a combination of properties are required, the foam can be laminated together in layers or can be laminated to other materials for use within more specialist applications when composite materials are needed.

    Benefits of Using Reconstituted Foam

    • Cushioning
    • Compressibility
    • Sound Absorption
    • Vibration Dampening
    • Cost effective
    • Insulating

    Available Grades of Polyurethane Foam

Advanced Seals & Gaskets work with a number of material manufacturers, giving our customers more choice when looking for polyurethane foam rolls, our most popular types being:

    • Acoustic
    • egg box
    • Pick & Pluck
    • HLB
    • Basotect
    • Polyester

    • Retic

Advantages of Using Reconstituted Polyurethane Foam Gaskets

Reconstituted foam gaskets hold many of excellent desirable properties that make them material desirable to many of our customers.   They are cost-effective and eco-friendly as the raw material is made from recycled off-cuts which are used to produce the master blocks of raw material. Gaskets cut using Recon foam can often be used for cushioning, sound and vibration control in industries such as automotive, audio, sports and leisure, aerospace, marine, rail, and domestic manufacturing sectors.

Even though Reconstituted polyurethane is made using waste from a mixture of different types of PU foams, it can still be made in different weights or densities by adjusting how much the chips are compressed during production allowing it to be used in various applications.   Using our state of the art equipment and master buns of material,  we are able to produce gaskets in various sizes and thicknesses using saws and presses, available in a plain finish or coated with a choice of foils and self adhesives.
