Static Dissipative Foam Strip

Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam Strips

Static Dissipative Foam Strip

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd manufacture thousands of Polyethylene foam strips daily, using a number of grades, densities and colours. Polyethylene Foams are a durable group of materials, designed for use in many different applications, with one such grade available from ASG being Static Dissipative Polyethylene, sometimes also referred to as Anti-static polyethylene.

Static Dissipative PE foam is black in colour, manufactured in sheet and roll form in thicknesses up to around 100mm, making strip conversion easier and lead times shorter. Static Dissipative PE strips are all manufactured by our highly skilled workforce using state of the art machinery, following our customers' samples or drawings. We can produce static dissipative polyethylene foam strips using one of our many band saws, strippers, log cutters and even presses depending upon the size and quantity required, whilst in-house production allows us to closely oversee the whole production process to ensure that we consistently produce high quality, competitively priced strips.

Our static dissipative polyethylene foam strips are cut from rolls or sheets, which are manufactured in a range of standard thicknesses starting at 1.5mm, these can be supplied coated with a self adhesive backing or laminated to other materials, which can then be cut into strips from around 4mm wide and in a choice of pre-cut lengths or in coils in lengths of up to 10meters long.

What Are Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam Strips?

Static Dissipative Polyethylene strips are pieces of material cut to a specific length and width, available as coils usually around 10 meters long as standard, but are available in longer and shorter lengths made to order. Static Dissipative Foam Strips can be cut down from pre-manufactured rolls of material or alternatively cut from sheets which are split down from buns of raw material, usually preferred when smaller or fewer strips are required. Longer strips can also be made by gluing blocks or sheets of the foam together to create the desired length, prior to being split down to thickness and then converted further into finished strips.

Strips or coils of Static Dissipative foam are often taken for use in a similar manner to a gasket, whereby they are used to create a seal between uneven surfaces and fill irregularities, sometimes being referred to as sealing strip, gasket strip or isolation stripStatic Dissipative foam strips are just one type of ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) products available from Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd.

The material itself is a black coloured, closed cell, polyethylene foam which is made using a combination of raw PE granules, conductive carbon, fillers and blowing agents which causes the material to foam prior to curing, resulting in the cellular structure within the material. Static dissipative PE strips offer a static dissipative function which is permanent, and has a lower carbon content than conductive foam meaning anti static foam can be used and an alternative to static dissipative applications.

Why Use Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam Strips?

Strips made using Static Dissipative Polyethylene foam are usually taken to to wrap items or line cases in which electronic components are to be transported which are static sensitive, these devices would otherwise become unusable if stored or shipped within inadequate packaging or none at all.

Electronic components all have a dielectric nature and so electrostatic charging cannot be completely prevented during handling of devices, and also where sensitive components are connected to a product creating ESD (Electrostatic discharge) which is a sudden surge of electric discharge between two electrically charged objects caused by contact or friction resulting in an electrical short or dielectric breakdown.

The most effective way to reduce the risk of ESD is to use a device likes these strips cut from rolls of material such as Static Dissipative PE foam, which will slowly conduct or ‘dissipate’ it, allowing the charges to flow to ground slower and in controlled manner, preventing discharge or shock.

Advantages Of Using Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam Strips

Strips of Static Dissipative foams offer customers and end users many features and advantages which not only result in cost savings, but also maintain a safe environment and device protection.

Just a few of the properties demonstrated by static dissipative foams include excellent strength and tear resistance, high shock absorbency, resistance to chemicals such as solvents, acids and grease. Being a closed cell material, SD polyethylene strips do not support mould and bacteria growth or allow for moisture absorption, will not cause chemical corrosion to components or surrounding packaging and as with most rolls of Polyethylene foams, can withstand temperatures of up to 90℃. Static Dissipative PE foam strips are available in many thicknesses cut from a selection of pre-manufactured rolls, but thanks to our excellent conversion facilities, we can split them down to non-standard thicknesses starting from as little as 1.5mm to order and produce any width from around 4 or 5mm wide.

Static Dissipative foam strips can be cut down to use within case inserts in order to fully secure and protect the products from movement, impact and most importantly damage from static charge, which in return saves customers and end-users money on having to replace damaged products, and can also be used within electrical devices themselves to seal casings or as interior gaskets and spaces.

Applications in which anti static polyethylene foam strips and other components cut from the material can be used include LCD screens on production lines of electrical devices such as mobile phones, laptops, computers and optic electronics.
