Acrylic Plastic Washers

Here at Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd, we are proud to be one of the UK’s leading manufacturers and suppliers of non-metallic washers with Plastic being one of the hundreds of material types Advanced Seals & Gaskets can offer, available in many grades.  One of the more popular types of plastic we offer is Acrylic Plastic, which may also be referred to as Polymethyl Methacrylate (PMMA)  or more commonly by the trade name ‘plexiglass’.

Acrylic plastic is manufactured in the form of sheets and tubes in a range of standard sizes, thicknesses and colours from which washers can be cut.  All our washers are manufactured in-house using a combination of a skilled workforce and high-spec machinery, using either our CNC oscillating knife or one of our many presses (for very thin washers).

Our range of machinery means we can manufacture acrylic plastic washers to match your specified dimensions in any quantity quickly and efficiently, which in return passes on a quality product and a cost-saving.

Acrylic plastic washers are produced using either samples, drawings or dimensions provided by customers, which would detail the Outer Diameter (OD), Internal Diameter (ID) and Thickness, manufactured in a plain or self-adhesive finish.

What are Acrylic Plastic Washers?

Acrylic Plastics a thermoplastic material meaning it becomes soft and moldable once it’s heated to a certain temperature and then solidifies upon cooling.

Acrylic plastic is strong, flexible and completely transparent, often used as a glass replacement, but is also a popular choice for the production of washers and seals as they’re lightweight and one of the preferred alternatives to metal due to their durability and resistance to corrosion and abrasions (where abrasive resistant grades are used).

A ‘washer’ is a flat piece of material that is placed between two surfaces or between joints in order to reduce friction and prevent unsteadiness, creating a level surface for nuts, bolts and other fixings to rest on, improving the fit for fixings and can be used as a water or air tight seal.

    Why use Acrylic Plastic Washers?

Acrylic plastics are used in a range of applications usually where transparency is required but a lightweight alternative to glass.  When cut into washers, they are used as air and watertight seals and as a non-corrosive alternative to metal, where the washers are to be used between moving parts, an abrasive resistant acrylic plastic can be used for longevity and wear resistance.

Acrylic plastic washers can be cut and converted into a range of sizes using various techniques including laser cutting, die-cutting, sawing and even thermoforming (where the material is heated until it is soft, re-shaped and then left to cool and harden).

Acrylic plastic washers can be manufactured in either a plain or self-adhesive backed finish with peel-able liner applied to one or both sides.

Acrylic plastic washers also have good chemical and weathering properties meaning it remains almost unchanged aesthetically over years of exposure and is a popular material choice for a huge range of applications including point of sales displays, interior and exterior decoration, industrial applications, food display protection and even bathroom fittings.

    Advantages of using Acrylic Plastic

Using acrylic plastic and products converted from them offer a whole host of benefits, not only are they cheaper and lighter in weight in comparison to metal and some sponge options, but also offer more resistance to wear and corrosion (will not rust unlike metal gaskets).

Despite being a fairly rigid material, plastic can still be compressed to create a tight seal and as well as being great for insulation applications as it does not conduct heat or electricity.

Acrylic plastic is also FDA approved and so these washers are safe for use within food preparation and production applications, often used within machinery, screens and display units.

Acrylic plastic materials and products offer outstanding strength and optical clarity, they’re easy to fabricate and will hold adhesives well. For more information on how plastic can help with your application, please give our sales team a call.
