Flame Retardant Polyethylene Rolls

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd have a huge storage facility, enabling us to stock buns (blocks), rolls and sheets of polyethylene foam materials in a range of grades, densities and colours ready for conversion or supply.

Flame retardant polyethylene rolls are just one of many types of foam products available from ASG, sometimes also called Flame Retardant block foam,FR-PE foam, Flame Retardant Polyethylene sponge or LDPE-FR (low density Polyethylene) foam.

Flame retardant rolls of polyethylene foam are made by joining and splitting 2 metre x 1 metre sized blocks of material using our state of the art splitting machines, which can quickly and accurately produce rolls of material at any thicknesses starting from as little as 1.5mm and supplied in lengths of up to 100 metres (depending on thickness), with standard flame retardant polyethylene rolls offered at 10 metres long.

As we offer in-house conversion and lamination services, we can not only split materials down, we can also laminate layers together to produce non-standard thicknesses or composite flame retardant polyethylene rolls using layers of different materials, as well as being able to apply a choice of self adhesives or foil facings.

Our facilities house a number of presses, log cutters, strippers, bandsaws, CNC machines and coaters, which can be used to produce a number of Polyethylene foam products including gaskets, washers, strips, pads and fabrications, all of which can be cut from flame retardant polyethylene rolls of Flame Retardant PE foam.

What Are Flame Retardant Polyethylene Foam Rolls?

As with all polyethylene materials, Flame Retardant Polyethylene foam, which is used to manufacture our flame retardant polyethylene rolls, is part of the Thermoplastic foam family, a chemically cross-linked foam, which is blown during the manufacturing process forming a small, uniform, closed-cell structure, resulting in a high-quality, lightweight material. Flame Retardant Polyethylene is manufactured using the same compound as standard PE, but with the addition of a Flame Retardant additive.

PE is a great general purpose material with a number of resistances and insulation properties as well as being available in a variety of grades (standard, EEV, EVA, Conductive, Anti-static and of course Flame Retardant) and densities. Densities in which flame retardant polyethylene rolls are produced include 25kg, 30kg, 45kg, 60kg, 100kg - the density of the foam is measured as the weight or mass of the foam across its entire volume or within a cubic metre (m3).

The denser the foam, the heavier and more compact the material is, this can vary some of the properties of the material and how it performs. All of these grades are manufactured in 2meter x 1meter sized blocks, which can be easily joined using a specialist bonding agent and split into continuous rolls of material, which can be taken in full, cut down into sheets or further converted into finished usable parts such as strips, tapes, gaskets, washers or pads.

Why Use Flame Retardant Polyethylene Foam Rolls?

When looking for a general purpose material, Polyethylene materials are often one the of first choices as they are formulated and manufactured in a range of grades and densities offering various properties for use in different applications. Polyethylene foam materials as standard have a low compression set, are resistant to water, oils, chemicals and weather - further additives can be added in order to produce grades with specific additional properties.

Flame Retardant Polyethene, which is used to manufacture polyethylene rolls is one such grade, during the compounding process the Flame Retardant additive is added which creates a material that burns slower or will even self-extinguish when exposed to open flames, both of which can help reduce the spread of the fire. Being made using a closed cell foam, flame retardant polyethylene rolls have a good tear resistance making them easy to accurately convert and cut.

Alongside the flame retardant properties, these flame retardant polyethylene rolls have a number of desirable other properties including resistance to wear and tear, Ozone, UV, a smooth closed cell surface which doesn’t support mold or fungus growth and a working temperature range of -60°C - +90°C. It also offers excellent mechanical characteristics including noise and vibration control and can be used for thermal insulation.

Rolls of flame retardant polyethylene can be taken where large surfaces are to be covered or larger components are being cut, they are also perfect for the production of strips or PE foam tapes as they can be quickly log cut to the desired width. By taking flame retardant polyethylene rolls, customers have the freedom to cut the material down to the required sized sheet or a specific number of washers or gaskets as and when they are required which saves them money and waste.

Advantages Of Using Flame Retardant Polyethylene Foam Rolls

Some types of Polyethylene foam are manufactured as jumbo rolls, but most are produced and cured in block form, allowing us to quickly and easily produce bespoke flame retardant polyethylene rolls in thicknesses starting from 1.5mm and lengths of up to 100 metres.

As Polyethylene foam is manufactured in various grades, customers benefit from a number of advantages and a choice of properties allowing the material to be utilised in numerous industries and applications from dust seals and flame retardant gaskets to theatre and production props.

Flame Retardant Polyethylene foam is a man-made material, with a closed cell structure which can be used in sealing applications against liquid, gases and particles, demonstrating resistance to wear, tear, Ozone and UV exposures, resilience to repeated impact and a working temperature range of -60°C to +90°C.

It also offers excellent mechanical characteristics including noise and vibration control, for shock absorption and can be used for thermal insulation. The incorporation of the Flame Retardant additives in the compounding also gives these rolls of material self-extinguishing and slower burn rate properties, meaning they are excellent for use where there is a risk of fire, as they will help reduce the spread of flames.

Polyethylene rolls have a smooth surface therefore aesthetically pleasing, with a nice texture which are easy to fabricate, laminate and cut into parts using a range of techniques and processes for use within the theatrics, building and construction, HVAC, automotive, packaging and sports industries.
