Abrasive Resistant Solid Rubber

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd supply and convert a range of solid rubber materials, including various types of natural rubber, one of which is abrasive resistant solid rubber.

As with many solid rubbers, abrasive resistant rubber is manufactured in roll or sheet form, in a range of thicknesses starting at 1.5mm.

Abrasive resistant natural rubber can be supplied as entire rolls, cut down to sheets or converted into usable parts such as gaskets, washers, pads or strips.

What is Abrasive Resistant Solid Rubber?

Abrasion is the term referring to the ‘wear’ caused on material when it comes into physical contact with another object or surface.

Abrasive resistant solid rubber is manufactured using a high-quality natural rubber, used in physically demanding applications and environments, offering extremely high resilience to wear and tear and used to provide a solution to mechanical impact damage, scraping, grinding and corrosion.

Abrasion is more likely to occur where movement or motion creates friction-induced wear and tear, here is when an abrasion-resistant rubber can be used to provide the best form of surface protection.

Why use Abrasive Resistant Solid Rubber?

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd offer abrasion-resistant rubber in a range of different grades and material options, each with different resistance levels and properties suited to various applications and industries.

A material with abrasion resistance properties will resist wear and erosion caused by mechanical wear, allowing the material to retain its original form for longer, therefore, reducing the risk of component or product failure and saves on the cost of having to replace the material more often.

Abrasive resistant solid rubber can also offer a range of other characteristics and properties including ozine, weathering, UV, oil and chemical resistance, however, these will vary between material grades.

Advantages to Using Abrasion Resistant Rubber

    • Can be used in physically demanding applications and environments
    • Offers extremely high resilience to wear and tear
    • Provides surface protection and a solution to mechanical impact damage, scraping, grinding and corrosion.
    • Cost savings as long lasting material, therefore reduced risk of a component or product failure.
    • Can offer a range of other characteristics and properties including ozone, weathering, UV, oil and chemical resistances (these will vary between material grades)
    • Can be used as sheets or cut into gaskets to use within machinery and equipment

    Different Grades

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd have a network of material manufacturers and suppliers, giving our customers more choice of abrasive resistant materials including:

Natural Rubber (NR) - perhaps the most popular material type offered when customers are looking for a robust abrasive resistant rubber, strong enough for use with slurry mixes, silo lining, gaskets, chutes, wear pads and shot blast screening, etc. This mechanically strong material however isn’t best suited for use with oil or where there is excessive exposure to ozone and weather. Types of Natural Rubber that can be used for abrasive resistant applications include BS1154, red abrasion-resistant rubber, white abrasion-resistant (FDA) rubber and tan shotblast rubber.

Red abrasion resistant rubber is a tough grade of material manufactured from a high-quality natural rubber (NR) specifically designed to provide resistance to abrasion and tear. It is commonly used for sacrificial quarry linings and slurry handling plants, target backing curtains, gaskets, fabricated parts and seals, sleeves, and tank and silo linings.

White abrasion-resistant rubber is also manufactured using natural rubber, but a softer compound, which still provides excellent resistance to abrasion and tear. This material is often utilized in product transfer applications such as chute and hopper liner or converted into gaskets for use within the food processing and packaging equipment or machinery.  This material offers good resistance to ketones, organic acids, alcohols and aldehydes, however aren't recommended for use with animal fats, petroleum, vegetable oils and most hydrocarbons.

Shotblast (tan para) rubber is a tan coloured, extremely robust and durable rubber, which has excellent resistance to abrasion, commonly used for chute lining, shot blast cabinet lining, gaskets or seals.  Also manufactured from natural rubber, this material offers excellent sealing properties, moderate resistance to some aldehydes, some diluted acids and weak chemicals, but not recommended for contact with solvents, petroleum and concentrated acids.

Styrene-Butadiene or SBR - a synthetic compound that is similar to natural rubber and most commonly found used in the production of tyres, seals, sleeves, scraper blades and impact buffer pads.  It offers excellent abrasion resistance but isn’t as durable when it comes to cuts and tearing.  As with natural rubber, SBR also is not as effective when exposed to weathering or ozone.

Butyl - This material offers many desirable properties including excellent thermal stability and resistance to abrasion, tear, impact, UV and weathering, it also has an impermeable structure required for air retention or gas sealing and tank lining applications, but is not recommended for use with petroleum, oils or chlorinated solvents.

EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) - EPDM does offer some resistance to abrasion, however, does not tend to be the first choice falling in between natural rubber and SBR levels of resistance. However, if the application only exposes the rubber to low-moderate levels of abrasion it will work just fine. EPDM as a material offers a long list of desirable qualities including exceptionally good resistance to weathering, ozone, UV, water, heat, phosphate ester-based hydraulic fluids, dilute acids and offers electrical insulation and anti-vibration properties.

Neoprene (Chloroprene) - this material offers a good level of resistance or abrasion, combined with excellent oil, weather, ozone and heat resistance.  Neoprene is suitable for sealing applications where other polymers would fail, including exposure to seawater.

Nitrile (NBR) - Nitrile rubber is more superior in comparison to most elastomers offering an excellent compression set, tear and abrasion resistance.  Neoprene also offers an extensive list of benefits including excellent resistance to oil, gasoline, solvents, mineral and vegetable oils, hydraulic fluid and fuels.  This material is often recommended for applications requiring a combination of oil and grease resistance as well as moderate ozone resistance.

Hydrogenated Nitrile (HNBR) - is another abrasion resistant rubber often used for tank lining. HNBR offers excellent resistance with oil, chemical and heat, with an improved fuel and ozone resistance in comparison to standard nitrile.
