Nylatron Strip

ASG are leading manufacturers of cut strip made using a choice of hundreds of materials including plastic, one of which is Nylatron®. Nylatron plastic is part of the Nylon family, and just one of many plastics available from Advanced Seals & Gaskets. Nylatron is often found utilised within the engineering and machinery sectors due to its strength and wear properties. Nylatron plastic is in a number of pre-manufactured sheet sizes as standard of up to 100mm thick, but can be cast much thicker than this if required from which strips can be cut, however as Nylatron plastics products are manufactured by casting, strips can also be made available in almost any bespoke length and thickness. Using our customers' drawings, samples or dimensions, one of our many on-site saws, presses or CNC machines, we are able to convert Nylatron plastic strips from sheets of material supplied with the option of a plain or self-adhesive backed finish.

    What are Nylatron Plastic Strips?

Nylatron plastics are often cut into a range of strips as they are lightweight and like most plastics, a preferred alternative to metals due to their durability and resistance to weathering and moisture corrosion. Nylatron plastic strips are often purchased for use in a similar way to a gasket, whereby they are used to create a seal between surfaces, fill irregularities or to act as insulation such as electrical barriers. Nylatron materials are a range of modified grades of Nylon, which are formulated with extra additives and compounds which in turn improve many of the properties in comparison to standard Nylon plastic. Nylatron is typically filled with Molybdenum disulfide, which is a lubricating powder, an inorganic compound composed of molybdenum and sulphur, widely used as a dry lubricant, which demonstrates low friction and robustness.

    Why use Nylatron Plastic Strips?

Each type of plastic is formulated to offer their own unique set of properties, strips manufactured from Nylatron have the flexibility to be utilised in a range of applications as it can be made in a variety of grades including unfilled, glass fiber filled, oil filled, internally lubricated, heat stabilized and fiber reinforced. Nylatron strips offer a high mechanical strength and wear resistance, improved load bearings, self lubricating properties and good electrical insulating properties.

Nylatron plastic strips are relatively easy to machine using the right tools and can therefore be used in the production of anti-vibration blocks or electrical insulation barrier strips, as well as many times of seals and fittings. As Nylatron plastic offers outstanding bearing and wear properties, strips can often be found used as an alternative to metal fixtures and fittings which are resistant to corrosion, reduce the need for additional lubrication and will reduce the wear on moving parts.

    Grades of Nylatron Plastic Available:

Nylatron Plastic is manufactured in a number of grades, each with varying levels of strength and resistance, suited to different applications, so of these variants include:

Nylatron GSM - an anthracite-coloured material with enhanced load bearing and impact resistance.

Nylatron GS - anthracite in colour which is a harder material with enhanced load bearing and wear properties, but has reduced impact resistance.

Nylatron NSM - a grey cast nylon formulation which contains solid lubricant additives - making this material self-lubricating! This grade offers more superior wear resistance and excellent frictional properties for use within applications with moving parts.

Nylatron MC901 - recognised by its blue colour, offering resistance to fatigue and higher levels of strength and flexibility.

Nylatron 4.6 - a brown/red coloured variant of Nylon plastic which demonstrates excellent stability, creep, wear and ageing resistance even when used in high temperatures.

    Benefits of Using Nylatron Plastic

    • Sliding properties, sometimes self-lubricating (depending on grade)
    • Electrical insulating properties
    • Wear resistance
    • Excellent mechanical strength
    • Fatigue resistance
    • Chemical and corrosion resistance

Advantages of Using Nylatron Plastic Strips

Plastic strips can be found used within a number of demanding industries, with Nylatron strips offering a number of advantages, just a few of these include improved sliding, mechanical and wear resistance properties enhanced using molybdenum disulfide lubricating powder. This lubrication additive also improves the thermal properties, without having any negative effects on the chemical and electrical properties of the strips. Standard Nylon strips are highly utilised in many engineering, mechanical and electrical industries, but some applications require a more robust and tough material, which is where Nylatron is perfect. Nylon strips can be cut from sheets of material or can be cast to create bespoke sizes.

Using Nylatron plastic strips can reduce the need for additional lubrication when used between moving parts, reduce the weight of a product by replacing metal parts and fixtures with plastic ones, reduce noise and wear caused by abrasion or impact. Nylatron plastic strips are very strong , offering some flex and recovery, making them more resistant to impact in comparison to metal alternatives, absorbing shock, noise and vibration. Some popular industries utilising Nylon plastic strips include machinery parts in engineering, aircraft, automotive and electronics industries. Using Nylatron strips are useful in applications where access to machinery parts that require lubrication are difficult to get to contact needs to remain minimal to reduce the risk of contamination.
