Here at Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd we pride ourselves on being one of the UK’s largest manufacturers and suppliers of non-metallic washers, one such material used is EPDM solid rubber. As with most solid grade materials, this is manufactured in roll form at 1.4 meters wide x 10meters long and in thicknesses starting at just 1mm, which are stocked by ASG ready to be shipped or converted into various other usable products including washers.
All our washers are manufactured in-house using a combination of a skilled workforce and high-spec machinery, using either our oscillating knife or one of our many presses, depending upon size, thickness and quantity required. Our range of machinery means we can manufacture EPDM rubber washers to match your specified dimensions in any quantity quickly and efficiently, which in return passes on a quality product and a cost-saving.
EPDM washers are produced using either samples, drawings or dimensions provided by customers, which would detail the outer diameter (OD), internal diameter (ID) and the thickness, manufactured in a plain, self-adhesive or foil-faced finish, as singular cut parts or kiss cut on a roll.
What are EPDM Washers?
A ‘washer’ is a flat piece of material that is placed between two surfaces or between joints in order to reduce friction and prevent unsteadiness, creating a level surface for nuts, bolts and other fixings to rest on, improving the fit for fixings and can be used as a water or airtight seal.
The EPDM materials used in the production of these washers are synthetic rubber, an abbreviation of Ethylene, Propylene, Diene and Monomer, a durable rubber that can be manufactured in a variety of grades and hardnesses (the shore hardness is measured using a shore durometer which indicates the level of resistance to indentation, the higher number on the scale indicate a greater resistance - harder the material/lower number indicate less resistance- softer the material).

Why use EPDM Washers?
When accurately cut to the correct shape and size EPDM rubber washers can create a tight, leak-proof seal that will remain unaffected when under impact. EPDM washers have an operating temperature range of -30°C to + 110°C and are resistant to environmental extremes such as UV rays, O-zone and weather making them suitable for both internal and external applications.
EPDM washers provide good general resistance to animal and vegetable oils, chemicals, steam, oxygenated solvents and electrical currents. EPDM material is waterproof and works well under pressure making the washers ideal for use within roofing, deep-sea and solar panel applications, while its noise insulating properties mean the washers are often featured in household appliances that call for lower levels of noise and movement. EPDM rubber is available in a number of hardnesses and grades, all of which can be supplied as pre-cut washers or in roll and sheet form for customers to cut their own.
The Advantages of Using EPDM Rubber Washers
There are many advantages to using EPDM rubber washers within many applications including its extensive list of properties and the variety of grades available. EPDM is ideal for use where a strong, versatile material is required in an environment where there may be exposure to the ozone, UV, chemicals, water, steam and acids.
The EPDM rubber material is readily available in a range of thicknesses, making the process of cutting washers a quicker process, the tear resistance of the material allows us to accurately cut and extract washers to meet our customer exact specifications without causing damage to the final product and also means they are less likely to fail once in situ.
By manufacturing our EPDM washers on-site means we can make them order and even laminate them with a choice of adhesives, foils or other materials to create a unique product.
Benefits of EPDM Washers
- Ozone, water and weather-resistant
- Variety of grades and hardnesses available
- Good resistance to animal and vegetable oils, chemicals, steam, oxygenated solvents
- Can be cut into bespoke gaskets in any quantity
- Creates an air and water tight seal
Advanced Seals & Gaskets work with many material manufacturers and suppliers, giving our customers more choice when looking for a EPDM washers, other grades of solid EPDM include:
FDA grades - Food quality EPDM is available in blue and white options. This synthetic material is suitable for use in food and pharmaceutical processing applications. Food quality EPDM offers good resistance to animal and vegetable oils, iis non-toxic and has a working temperature of -25°C up to +140°C.
WRAS approved EPDM rubber is suitable for use in potable water applications (water for human consumption) The material is resistant to weathering, ozone, ageing and chemicals and meets standards BS 6920-1:2000 and BS 6920-1:2014. WRAS approved EPDM has a working temperature of -40°C up to +120°C.
Peroxide Cured - Vulcanising or curing EPDM using peroxide (as opposed to Sulphur) produces a more superior material with higher temperature resistance, heat resistance and improved oil and chemical resistance, this material is suitable for demanding applications such as nuclear facilities.
Please get in touch if you are unsure which grade of EPDM you require for your application, samples of our materials are readily available for your perusal.
