Static Disipative Polyethylene Foam Rolls

Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam Rolls

Static Disipative Polyethylene Foam Rolls

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd stock rolls of PE foam in a number of grades, densities and colours. Polyethylene Foams are a durable group of materials, designed for use in many different applications, including Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam Rolls.

Polyethylene foams and components cut from the material can be used for sealing, gap filling, cushioning and insulation, with certain grades being produced for very specific applications. One such grade available from ASG is Static Dissipative Polyethylene, sometimes also referred to as Anti-static polyethylene. Static Dissipative PE foam is black in colour, manufactured in sheet and roll form in thicknesses up to around 100mm, making conversion easier and lead times shorter.

As we offer an in-house conversion and lamination service, we are able to not only split down standard rolls or sheets to create other thicknesses starting from just 1.5mm, we can also laminate layers together to create greater depths. These rolls can be supplied in full, or further converted into a range of finished products including pads, strips (tapes), washers, gaskets and even fabricated components using our state of the art conversion machinery which consists of presses, bandsaws, log cutters and a CNC Oscillating knife .

Our facilities also house a laminating division, allowing us to coat our conductive polyethylene rolls on one of both faces, adhering layers of material together to create greater depth or even laminating them to other materials to produce composite sheets prior to supplying or converting them.

What are Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam Rolls?

Static Dissipative Polyethylene rolls are continuous lengths of material, usually around 10 meters long as standard, but are available in other lengths made to order. Some thicknesses of static dissipative PE foam are manufactured as rolls, which can be cut down to the desired length or even into sheets.

Alternatively, rolls of Static Dissipative PE foam are made by joining blocks of material together to create the length required, before being run through one of splitting machines where it is skived or ‘peeled’ off, resulting in rolls of foam in thicknesses requested by customers. These rolls are just one type of ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) products available from Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd.

The material is a black-coloured, closed-cell, polyethylene foam which is made using a combination of raw PE granules, conductive carbon, fillers and blowing agents which causes the material to foam prior to curing, resulting in the cellular structure within the material. Static dissipative PE rolls and products cut from them offer a static dissipative function which is permanent, and has a lower carbon content than conductive foam meaning anti static foam can be used and an alternative to static dissipative applications.

Why Use Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam Rolls?

Rolls of Static Dissipative Polyethylene foam are usually cut down and used to wrap item or line cases in which electronic components are to be transported which are static sensitive and would otherwise become unusable if stored or shipped within inadequate packaging or none at all.

Electronic components all have a dielectric nature and so electrostatic charging cannot be completely prevented during handling of devices, and also where sensitive components are connected to a product creating ESD (Electrostatic discharge) which is a sudden surge of electric discharge between two electrically charged objects caused by contact or friction resulting in an electrical short or dielectric breakdown.

The most effective way to reduce the risk of ESD is to use a device cut from rolls of material such as Static Dissipative PE foam, which will slowly conduct or ‘dissipate’ it, allowing the charges to flow to ground slower and in controlled manner, preventing discharge or shock.

Advantages Of Using Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam Rolls

Rolls of ESD Foams including Static Dissipative foams and components cut from them offer many features and advantages which not only result in cost savings, but also maintain a safe environment and device protection.

Just a few of the properties demonstrated by rolls of static dissipative foams include excellent strength and tear resistance, high shock absorbency, resistance to chemicals such as solvents, acids and grease. Being a closed cell material, SD polyethylene foam rolls don’t support mould and bacteria growth or allow for moisture absorption, it will not cause chemical corrosion to components or surrounding packaging and as with most rolls of Polyethylene foams, can withstand temperatures of up to 90℃.

Static Dissipative PE foam rolls are available in many thicknesses, but thanks to our excellent conversion facilities, can split them down to non-standard thicknesses starting from as little as 1.5mm.

Static Dissipative foam rolls can be cut down in perfectly fitting profiles and case inserts in order to fully secure and protect the products from movement, impact and most importantly damage from static charge, which in return saves customers and end-users money on having to replace damaged products.

Applications in which anti static polyethylene foam rolls and components cut from them can be used include LCD screens on production lines of electrical devices such as mobile phones, laptops, computers and optic electronics.
