What are Flame Retardant Neoprene Sponge Seals?
Flame-retardant neoprene sponge seals are also often referred to as polychloroprene or CR it is one of many materials on offer from our vast catalogue. This grey coloured, closed-cell, general-purpose material is very versatile and used to manufacture a number of our products, offering all of the properties of a standard neoprene, such as good weathering, oil and chemical resistance, but with the addition of being used as a flame-resistant barrier for fire risk applications, as it meets flammability tests of FMVSS302 / UL94-HF1.
Flame-retardant neoprene sponge seals are made from expanded neoprene, a waterproof, flexible, and durable material with excellent sealing and insulation properties, making it suitable for a wide range of indoor and outdoor sealing applications. Flame-retardant neoprene sponge seals are a device or substrate that is used to join surfaces together to either act as a separator or a body to prevent liquids, solids or gases from escaping or penetrating the seal. Our neoprene sponge seals can take the form of cut gaskets, strips, washers, extruded profiles, and cord, all manufactured from the same closed-cell sponge that can be compressed, which in turn ‘hardens’ the material to create a secure seal.
In contrast to solid rubber, which is used for more rigid, heavy-duty sealing applications, neoprene sponge offers greater flexibility and compressibility for a wide range of uses.
Many of our neoprene sponge seals can be supplied with a choice of self-adhesive, which helps hold the seal in situ. Self-adhesive sponge products are also available for easy installation.

Why use Flame Retardant Neoprene Sponge Seals?
Oufflame-retardant neoprene sponge seals are available in many forms, but they all possess the same desirable properties, making them a popular choice across many industries. Flame-retardant neoprene sponge rubber has a range of desirable properties, which means it can be used in countless applications.
FR neoprene sponge seals can be used to fill gaps between uneven joins and provide anti-vibration and sound insulation. They provide fair resistance to oils, acids and alkalis, with good resistance to gases, UV, ozone, weathering and oxidation. Their closed-cell structure prevents mould and fungus growth and provides an excellent seal against water and air with minimal compression. Flame-retardant neoprene seals have a vast working temperature range of -40°C to +80℃. They are tested to Flame Resistance FMVSS302 and UL94-H, F1 and are great for use in abrasive and most internal and external applications, such as heating & ventilation, white goods, automotive, and electrical sealing.
The Advantages of Using Flame Retardant Neoprene Sponge Seals
Flame-retardant neoprene sponge seals are produced using a premium-grade material, formulated to offer all the properties and features of standard neoprene sponge, and also conform to flammability tests UL94-HF1 and FMVSS302 for use in applications where the risk of fire is present.
The material itself is long-lasting, with a wide operating temperature range, which can be utilised for many indoor and outdoor applications. It is manufactured and cured as blocks that are easy to convert into many bespoke products, including seals, using a range of techniques and processes, and will hold self-adhesive and other backings well.
Under minimal compression, neoprene FR-grade sponge pads will provide an excellent dust, air, and watertight seal, as well as good resistance to oil. Being a flexible and robust material, neoprene FR sponges are often used in many applications, including the production of flame-retardant gaskets for chemical transport seals.
Flame-retardant neoprene sponge is another of ASG's core materials, held in stock as a block, sheet and roll, ready for immediate dispatch and seal conversion.

Different Types Available
Advanced Seals & Gaskets work with several material manufacturers, meaning our customers benefit from a choice of neoprene grades:
Neoprene sponge rubber is a versatile, expanded neoprene material that offers good flexibility, excellent sealing properties, and resistance to UV and ozone. It has a working temperature range of -40ºc to +115ºc, good chemical stability, and good general resistance to oils and petroleum-based fuels.
Firm Grade Neoprene sponge gaskets are also closed-cell, fire-resistant, tested to FMVSS 302, and have a density of 180kg (+/- 25), meaning they can be used in more heavy-duty applications and require less compression to create a tight seal.
EPDM/Neoprene Blend sponge is a highly versatile material, combining the properties of both types of sponge: the excellent weathering and outdoor resistance of EPDM and the oil/chemical resistance of neoprene. It is the ideal choice for many outdoor sealing applications. Silicone sponge strips are also available for applications requiring higher temperature resistance or different sealing properties.
Please get in touch if you are unsure which grade of neoprene sponge you require for your gasket, or if you would like samples for your own testing.
Please note that delivery lead times may vary depending on the specific grade or product selected.
Manufacturing Process
The manufacturing process of self-adhesive neoprene sponge strips is designed to ensure optimal performance in a wide range of sealing applications. It begins with the production of neoprene sponge, a material known for its closed-cell structure, which creates excellent resistance to air, water, and dust. This closed-cell material is expanded and then precisely cut to the required thicknesses and widths, ensuring each sponge strip meets the specific needs of the application.
Once the neoprene sponge has been cut to the largest required dimension, a self-adhesive backing is applied to one surface of the strip. This adhesive backing is engineered to create a strong, reliable bond with a variety of surfaces, making installation straightforward and secure. The adhesive is protected by an easy-release liner that peels away during application, allowing the strip to be quickly and accurately positioned.
Self-adhesive neoprene sponge strips are supplied in a range of thicknesses, widths, and lengths, making them suitable for everything from small-scale projects to large industrial installations. The material's flexibility allows it to conform to irregular surfaces, creating a tight, effective seal that prevents the ingress of air, dust, and moisture. This manufacturing process ensures that each strip delivers consistent quality and performance, whether used as a draft excluder, gasket, or for any other sealing application.
Applications and Uses
Self-adhesive neoprene sponge strips are a versatile solution for a wide variety of sealing applications across multiple industries. In the automotive sector, these strips are commonly used to create a watertight seal around doors, windows, and panels, effectively blocking air, dust, and moisture. Their excellent resistance to oil, chemicals, and UV light makes them ideal for demanding industrial applications, where they help seal and insulate equipment, pipes, and ducts.
In construction, self-adhesive neoprene sponge strips are frequently applied as draft excluders on doors and windows, creating an airtight seal that prevents leaks and improves energy efficiency. Their ability to conform to irregular surfaces ensures a reliable seal even on rough or uneven panels. For marine and outdoor sealing applications, these strips offer good resistance to ozone, sunlight, and moisture, making them a dependable choice for weatherproofing and protecting outdoor equipment.
The self-adhesive backing simplifies installation, eliminating the need for additional adhesives or mechanical fixings. This not only speeds up the process but also ensures a clean, professional finish. Whether used to seal access panels, glazing systems, or as a flexible solution to prevent gas and air leaks, self-adhesive neoprene sponge strips provide a durable, long-lasting barrier that stands up to the toughest environments. Their adaptability and performance make them a preferred choice for both indoor and outdoor applications, offering a reliable solution wherever a strong, resilient seal is required.
