Conductive Foam Pads

Conductive Polyethylene foams are just one of many PE foam types stocked and converted here at Advanced Seals & Gaskets. These foams are held in block or ‘bun’ form ready to be converted into one of thousands of bespoke products including pads such as conductive polyethylene foam pads.

PE foams are amongst one of the most popular and durable materials available from ASG, available in a range of densities and grades, and utilised in a wide range of industries and applications. One such grade ASG can offer and convert is Conductive Polyethylene, which like most other PE foams is manufactured in block form which using our state-of-the-art in-house conversion facilities, can be split down into sheets or rolls at as little as 1.5mm thicknesses from which conductive polyethylene foam pads can be cut.

Our conductive polyethylene foam padsare produced on-site using drawings or measurements provided by our customers, with whom we work closely to ensure the final product is to their exact specification. Depending upon the size and quantity of pads required, one of many presses, bandsaws or CNC machines can be used to manufacture the final product, from one off samples to multiple batch runs, which can be supplied as loosely cut parts, or kiss-cut on rolls where a high quantity is required or for use on fast paced assembly lines.

What are Conductive Polyethylene Foam Pads?

Conductive Polyethylene Foam pads are cut from sheets or rolls of material and often used in a similar way to a gasket, whereby they create a seal between uneven surfaces and fill irregularities.

Our pads can be manufactured as squares or rectangles with the option of having radius corners, and also as ovals or circular shaped pads or ‘discs’, in a range of thicknesses starting at just 1.5mm. Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd offer a number of Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) foams, including Conductive Polyethylene Foam.

This grade is similar to standard PE foam but has carbon added to the compound mix which produces the black colour, a surface resistance of less than 106ohms and high levels of conductivity, designed to allow electrical current to pass through away from the product or component it is protecting. Unlike some of the other ESD foams on the market, Conductive Polyethylene is permanently conductive and therefore these pads are suitable for repeated transport and handling use.

Why use Conductive Polyethylene Foam Pads?

Conductive Polyethylene foam pads can be used to fill gaps between irregular surfaces, protect againsgt impact and vibration and cushion between moving parts reducing the build of friction and static electrical static discharge.

During product production and transportation, fragile and expensive items require extra protection, so too do electrically static sensitive components which are at risk from becoming unusable if stored or shipped using inadequate packing type.

Electrical goods and electronic components all naturally have a dielectric nature which makes them prone to damage from surrounding electrostatic charge created during handling and movement of devices or where the item is directly connected to a product which creates ESD - this is where a sudden surge of electric discharge between two electrically charged objects caused by contact or friction resulting in an electrical short or dielectric breakdown.

Conductive PE foam (used to manufacture conductive polyethylene foam pads) is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of ESD as it slowly conducts the charges, allowing them to flow through its cell structure in a controlled manner which prevents discharge or shock.

Advantage of using Conductive Polyethylene Foam Pads

Polyethylene foams are a man made material, with a closed cell structure meaning the pads can be used in sealing and cushioning applications. Conductive PE foam pads, as with those made from other ESD foams, offer many advantages and features which help maintain a safe environment, save money and protect expensive components.

Some of the many properties demonstrated by conductive polyethylene include strength and resistance to tear, good shock and impact absorption, vibration dampening and resistance to water, grease, solvent and chemicals.

Being a closed cell PE foam, Conductive Polyethylene doesn't support the growth of mould and bacteria, nor does it allow for moisture absorption, it is odourless, non-toxic (unless ignited) and will not cause chemical corrosion to components or surrounding packing.

As Conductive Polyethylene foams are manufactured in block form, they can be quickly and easily split and cut into pads supplied in virtually any thicknesses or used as case inserts for added security and protection from impact, movement and most importantly, damage from static charge, therefore saving end-users and manufacturers money on having to replace damaged products and also protects those in contact with the component from static shock.

Applications in which conductive PE can be found include medical devices , handheld electronic devices, display units such as LCD, LED lighting and within telecommunications, to name a few.
