Medical

Advanced Seals and Gaskets Ltd produces a wealth of products suitable for the Medical Industry from its vast range of open and closed cell foams and sponges. We offer a number of medical-grade materials which are converted into products for use within the healthcare industry for a number of applications such as cushioning, fluid management, sealing medical devices and as components in PPE (face masks, shields and visors).  Choosing the right material will depend upon the application it will be used for, for example, closed-cell materials such as some varieties of Plastazote and Polyethylene are more commonly used for medical packaging or gap filling in a number of medical devices and components. Open-cell foams such as Polyurethane (polyether, polyester & reticulated foams) are also frequently used in a wide range of medical applications.

Our medical foams and sponges are available in a range of colours, densities and thicknesses which can be converted to products including sheets, rolls, pads, strips, gaskets and washers tailored to meet the clients exact requirements with or without self-adhesive backing.

Self-adhesive Medical Sponge and Foam

ASG can supply its Medical Grade materials and products with self-adhesive backing, laminated to one or multiple faces. The purpose of the adhesive is to hold the sponge in position, ensuring it remains stable even when the surface it is applied to moves.

Customers have low, medium or high tack adhesive options, depending upon the individual requirements.  Members of our sales team are on hand to answer questions or offer advice.

Medical Grade Materials – Open Cell, Closed Cell

Open-Cell Foam

Advanced Seals & Gaskets offer Polyether and Polyester Polyurethane foam (PU) for use in a number of medical applications. These materials are lightweight, resilient, low odour and high resistance to resistance, mould and bacteria growth. It provides excellent cushioning and is used extensively in applications such as bedding, medical packaging, wearables (wrist support, PPE face masks, visors etc).

Reticulated polyurethane foam is another open cell material supplied by Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd and used extensively in the medical industry. This particular material is very flexible has excellent elongation and tear characteristics, it can be washed/cleaned, resistant to microbial organisms, and can be made-manufactured in grade with added anti-fungal and anti-bacterial additives for extra safety. Reticulated PU foam is commonly found in products involved in fluid management, filtration (blood filtration), and sound absorption.

Closed-Cell Foams

Closed-cell polyethylene foams are lightweight, flexible and more rigid than open-cell types, it is more suited for the manufacture of reusable PPE and medical products as the foam can be wiped cleaned and is impermeable to moisture and bacteria.  These materials can be fabricated for packaging i.e laminated and routered to exact shapes and sizes to hold valuable or fragile medical items.

One of the closed-cell medical-grade foams supplied by Advanced Seals & Gaskets is a Cross-linked polyethylene foam (Plastazote/Evazote). This material has many of the other same properties as Polyethylene Foam but more resilient and softer in feel and has been produced for use in medical and health care applications which involve direct skin contact. Grades of Plastazote and Evazote which have specifically produced for medical use are latex-free, non-toxic and hypoallergenic so that they reduce skin irritation. These foams are also ideal for wearable’s, splints, supports, MRI vests and operating rooms.  Cross-linked Polyethylene foam can also be moulded to create bespoke products for cushioning and support.

Another closed-cell foam offered by us is PE or Polyethylene foam, this is a durable, lightweight, resilient, material with resistance to moisture and chemicals and excellent insulation properties against vibration. It therefore often used for packaging delicate, sensitive items and devices.

Why use Medical Grade Foam & Sponge?

Medical Grade foams supplied by Advanced Seals & Gaskets are manufactured with anti-bacterial properties. Open Cell polyurethane foams are popular foam for use in producing PPE such as Face Shields, Visors and Face Masks. This is because it combines comfort with protection due to its soft characteristics. Open-cell foams and sponges are better suited to single-use items as they absorb liquids and allow for the ingress of dust and dirt.

Our medical-grade closed-cell polyethene is lightweight, flexible and more rigid than open-cell types, it is more suited for the manufacture of reusable PPE and medical products as the foam can be wipes cleaned and is impermeable to moisture and bacteria.

Medical Grade materials play a huge part within the medical and health care industry and are used for a number of applications, these include:

  • Dressings
  • Surgery/PPE face masks/ visors/shields
  • Sealing  medical devices
  • Medical cushioning (including body/foot pressure relief/wheelchair/beds)
  • Prosthetic padding
  • Customised orthotics
  • Fluid Regulators
  • Wrist rests
  • Tablet bottle inserts
