EPDM Sponge

epdm sponge

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd are proud to be one of the UK’s leading suppliers of sponge materials, one of which includes EPDM in various grades and densities including medium, firm, high temperature, semi-open cell and EPDM/Neoprene blend. Our EPDM sponge (with the exception of the High-Temperature grade) is manufactured and stocked in block form, which we can split down into sheets or join together and then split to produce continuous lengths or rolls of materials in thicknesses starting at just 1mm. On-site conversion facilities mean we can split sheets and rolls down to order, stock them ready for despatch or use them to further convert into multiple usable finished parts including pads, washers, gaskets or strips - all supplied plain or laminated with a choice of one of our many self-adhesives or foils.

What is EPDM Sponge?

EPDM is an abbreviation of Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer which are the chemical components used to manufacture these sponges. EPDM sponge is a strong, synthetic material which is closed cell (apart from the semi-open cell grade) making it an ideal material for internal and external sealing applications where minimal compression is required for the material to work effectively. EPDM sponge is produced in block form (apart from the High temperature), which can be taken by customers in complete rolls and sheets or pre-cut into finished parts including strips, gaskets, washers, pads or even extruded profiles.

    Why use EPDM sponge?

EPDM sponge materials offer a number of excellent qualities and properties, often used to cut parts for use as seals to fill gaps and irregularities between two surfaces and to provide a solution to unwanted rattles, noise, vibrations, to seal against air, gas, dust and liquids, and can also be used to cushion between moving parts to reduce friction and damage to components and equipment.

EPDM sponge is a closed cell material, therefore even when not compressed(unless the semi open cell type is used), its nitrogen gas filled cells prevent the passage of air, liquids and gasses, the releasing of nitrogen gas gives the material its strong compression set and recovery characteristics. EPDM sponge materials are popular for use in a variety of applications and can be found used within the construction industry, in automotive interiors, electronic, lighting systems ventilation glazing seals and door sealing.

The Benefits of using EPDM sponge

    • Noise, vibration, shock and abrasion reduction

    • Flexible with good compression recovery

    • Cost effective and readily available

    • Naturally compressible to create the perfect seal to control air and water leaks

    • Closed cell structure prevents bacteria and mould build up

    • Excellent properties making it popular for use in a range of industries and applications

    • Easy to convert into a range of products including pads, strips and gaskets, and will hold most adhesives well

    Advantages of using EPDM sponge

EPDM sponge is a strong, synthetic material which is generally closed cell making it an ideal material for internal and external sealing applications where minimal compression is required for the material to work effectively, it has an excellent lifespan even when used outdoors and is free from dust and fibre.

EPDM sponge can be manufactured in a range of sizes and thickness, with a choice of foils and self adhesives applied to one or both faces.  For very thick gaskets or a combination of properties are required, EPDM sponge can be laminated to other materials for use within more specialist applications.

EPDM sponge is a popular choice of material that is air and water tight, ages well without becoming brittle, offers good UV resistance and able to withstand a wide scale of temperatures ranging from -20°C up to a high of 85°C.

It’s excellent electrical insulation material, as well as having good resistance to ketones, ordinary diluted acids and alkalis, Ozone, UV and weathering as well as its general resistance to abrasion. EPDM foam is also flammability tested to meet FMVSS302 and UL94 HBF standards.

Acoustic foam gaskets hold various advantageous properties that are highly utilizable in a variety of industries.

The greatest advantage of using acoustic foam gaskets is the exceptional noise dampening capabilities of the material. As acoustic foam is an open cell material it is highly effective at absorbing sounds as well as cushioning and padding.

Acoustic foam gaskets commonly used as the material performs multiple functions at the same time, while the acoustic foam gasket is applied for cushioning the material will also absorb sound waves dampening the noise.

EPDM sponge Medium density is air and watertight, ages well without becoming brittle offers good UV resistance and is able to withstand a wide scale of temperatures ranging from -20°C up to a high of 85°C.

High Temperature EPDM Foam is closed cell and highly flexible even at low temperatures, with an amazing temperature range of -50°c to +128°c. High-Temperature EPDM foam has many excellent mechanical characteristics including thermal and insulation properties, making this material ideal for many industries and applications including HVAC, Refrigeration, Pipeline, Automotive, White goods and Building & construction, etc.

Semi Open cell EPDM combines the flexibility of an open cell material with the excellent sealing capabilities of closed-cell types once compressed. Semi-open cell EPDM pads will allow for ingress of air, dust, moisture until compressed by 80% of their thickness, following this the product becomes water and airtight and behaves as a closed-cell product.

Firm Grade EPDM Foam is a more resilient material that will not compress as much as the standard grades under load, also this material benefits from increased tear strength and suits some of the more demanding applications such as Automotive, White Goods, Marine, Defence, Building and Construction, etc
