Polyester Plastics

Alongside the multitude of sponge, foam and rubber materials stocked and supplied by Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd, we also offer a range of plastics in various grades and colours with one type being Polyester Plastic.

Polyester plastics or PET  Polyester resins combine excellent mechanical, electrical and thermal properties with very good chemical resistance and dimensional stability. Polyesters also offer low moisture absorption and have good flow properties.  Polyester plastics can be manufactured in a standard grade, but also in glass-reinforced and flame retardant, these specialist grades are designed for use in applications where a higher strength or heat resistance is required.

Polyester Plastics can be supplied in a range of sheet sizes up to 3050 x 2050mm and in thicknesses between 0.8 and 6mm as standard, but can also be moulded into bespoke shapes and profiles.  Here at Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd, we can take sheets of Polyester plastic and not only supply them in full, but also use them to convert into a variety of finished components including pads, strips, washers and gaskets, supplied in a plain finish or with a choice of self-adhesives and foils.

    What are Polyester Plastics?

PET or (polyethylene terephthalate) is a commonly used material which  provides high dimensional stability, excellent mechanical strength and good resistance to creep.  Polyester is a thermoplastic which means it can repeatedly be melted and reformed.

It offers resistance to chemicals, provides very low moisture absorption and is a good electrical insulator.   Polyester, or Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) is a plastic material produced by reacting terephthalic acid with ethylene glycol    Due to the materials good creep strength, low moisture absorption and outstanding dimensional stability, Polyester plastic material is suited to applications where complex parts with dimensional accuracy and surface quality are needed.

    Why use Polyester Plastic?

Polyester is a high density plastic combining excellent mechanical, electrical and thermal properties with good chemical resistance and dimensional stability.

Polyester plastics offer dimensional stability and high moisture absorption, they can be manufactured in sheet form which can be further machined and converted into usable parts, or alternatively extruded or moulded into bespoke shapes and profiles.

Polyester plastic materials have good electrical properties, heat and aging resistance, low creep, good color retention, and wear resistance. Polyester  plastics can be used where there is exposure to dilute acids, oils and greases and alcohol, UV and a number of chemicals offering an operating temperature range of -20°C up to +115ºC.

    Other types of plastic available

Advanced Seals & Gaskets work with a multitude of material manufacturers and suppliers, giving our customers more choice of plastic sheeting - our most popular materials being:

    • PTFE
    • PVC
    • Nylon
    • Polycarbonate
    • HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene)
    • ABS
    • Polypropylene
    • Acetal
    • Acrylic
    • Nylatron

    Benefits of using Polyester Plastic

    • low water absorption
    • Excellent electrical properties
    • Excellent resistance to chemicals
    • Good heat and heat ageing resistance.
    • Chemically insert - suitable for food and drink packaging
    • Excellent wear properties

    Advantages of using Polyester Plastic

As with other plastics, Polyester has its own set of excellent properties and characteristics which make it an excellent material choice for a number of applications.  Polyester plastic is easily machinable even where there is very delicate detailing, or can alternatively be moulded or extruded into an infinite number of bespoke shapes and profiles with smooth or textured surfaces.

It offers excellent electrical properties, resistance to heat and heat ageing, excellent wear properties, low water absorption, UV, Ozone and chemical resistance.  These excellent features makes the material highly durable and offers endless uses.

Polyester plastics and components cut from them can be found in the automotive industry as interior cases, handles and wiper arms, they can be uses as switches and casings in the electronics industry, converted into gears, gaskets, rollers for engineering uses and even as medicine dispensers and dosers within the pharmaceutical industry.  Transparent Polyester is also safe for use as food and drink packaging, sometimes used a egg cartons, as a glass alternative to bottles.
