Poron Sponge Rubber

Poron Sponge Rubber

Poron Sponge Rubber

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd stock and convert sponge materials from a number of worldwide material manufacturers and suppliers, allowing us to offer customers more choice when looking for a suitable product for their application, one of which includes Poron Sponge Rubber.

Poron sponge is manufactured at continuous roll lengths in a range of thicknesses from 0.53 mm to 12.7 mm, with a skin finish on both faces. For non-standard thicknesses we can run the rolls through our state-of-the-art splitting machines to create thicknesses from just 1.5mm with a cell/cell or skin/cell finish.

Onsite conversion facilities consist of various presses, log cutters, slitters, bandsaws and an oscillating knife, allowing us to convert rolls of material into finished parts including pads, washers, gaskets or strips - all supplied plain or laminated with a choice of our many self-adhesives or foils.

    What is Poron Sponge Rubber?

Poron sponge rubber is a closed cell microcellular urethane foam manufactured by casting and curing foamed urethane compound at various thicknesses.  Poron sponge is a high density, flexible material designed to offer low outgassing, non-fogging and non-corrosive properties suited for use in the production of gaskets, seals and within vibration management applications.  Poron sponge comes in a wide range of grades, these vary from very soft that is easily compressible and offers enhanced sealability to the firmer grades which are able to manage high energy impact. There is also a slow recovery grade for applications that require a low closure force. Poron Sponge is generally manufactured in continuous rolls with an extensive range of thicknesses.

    Why use Poron Sponge Rubber?

Poron sponge is manufactured with a smooth outer skin on both faces, offering a number of properties making it suitable for use to create a watertight seal, as a thermal insulator and to reduce vibration and noise, as well as being impact, chemical, heat, UV and Ozone resistant.  Poron sponge meets flammability standards UL-94HBF and MVSS 302 even without the need for flame retardant additives being used, it is also low outgassing and non-fogging which prevents it from becoming fragile over time and disintegrating, whilst also being non-corrosive towards parts or machinery as the material is formulated without the use of plasticisers or residual chemicals.

Benefits of Using Poron Sponge Rubber

    • Excellent compression set resistance
    • Temperature Range of -40 to +90 °C
    • Good chemical resistance
    • Flame Retardant to UL-94HBF and MVSS 302
    • non-corrosive
    • Easy to fabricate and cut into numerous components

    Other Grades of Sponge Available

There are different types and grades of sponge rubber sheets available for use within many industries each with their own unique characteristics. Popular types of sponge rubber include:

EPDM sponge rubber is a high quality material with excellent weathering, UV and ozone resistance, making it ideal for outdoor sealing.  EPDM sponge rubber rolls offer a wide operating temperature range, acoustic, thermal and vibration dampening properties and also good mechanical strength and abrasion resistant properties.   Grades of EPDM include medium, firm, high temp and semi open cell.

Neoprene sponge rubber is a versatile material, featuring  good resilience and resistance to UV and ozone.  It has a working temperature range of -40ºc to +115ºc, good chemical stability, and good general resistance to oils and petroleum-based fuels.

Silicone sponge is a resilient material with high temperature stability, chemically inert and waterproof.   Silicone sponge is closed cell, available in a range of densities (firmness) it has a number of features which  make it suitable for outdoor sealing including Ozone, UV resistance and temperature flexibility, meaning it will not freeze/crack.

Viton sponge is another closed cell variety of sponge rubber offered by ASG.  It is manufactured with skin on both faces which increases its tear resistance.  It has a wide working temperature range of -25°C to +204°C and good resistance to hydrocarbons, oils, fuels, lubricants, acids, weathering and ozone.

PVC Nitrile sponge is suitable for use as air, gas and watertight sealing, as thermal insulation and to reduce unwanted or excess vibration and noise, it is impact, heat, UV and Ozone resistant and flame retardant.

Industrial sponge rubber is a high quality, open cell natural sponge rubber.  The open cell structure enables excellent compression recovery, but also to form around uneven surfaces, limited absorption and circulation of gas and liquids if required.  It’s an excellent choice of material for us as protective sponge, expansion joints and anti-vibration applications.

    Advantages of Using Poron Sponge

Poron sponge is a strong, flexible high quality material which is manufactured in a range of roll sizes and thicknesses available for despatch in full sized rolls, sheet or pre-cut parts.  Poron sponge and components cut from this material offer an excellent compression set resistance, creating a durable product which allows for long -term use.  This non-fogging and low out-gassing foam contains no residual chemicals or plasticizers which means not only will the material not become brittle and disintegrate  - but it will also not contaminate devices or corrode metals around it.  Poron sponge offers moisture, chemical, UV and Ozone resistant properties which prevents condensation, corrosion and the growth of bacteria, rot and fungus, has a working temperature range of -40°C to +90°C  and is also flame retardant to standards UL-94 HBF and MVSS 302.  As Poron is manufactured in roll form, it can easily be converted into longer length strips or tapes, large or small gaskets and washers or taken in sheet form.  Poron sponge and components cut using Poron can be found used as trims, glazing seals, anti-vibration pads, automotive and lighting gaskets to name a few.
