PVC Nitrile Sponge Rubber

PVC Nitrile Sponge Rubber

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd work with a number of worldwide sponge and foam material manufacturers and suppliers, allowing us to offer customers more choice when looking for a suitable product for their application, one of which includes PVC Nitrile Sponge Rubber.

PVC Nitrile sponge or PVC/NBR is manufactured at continuous lengths in a range of thicknesses from 3mm to 50mm, with a skin finish on both faces, however, greater thicknesses may only be available as sheets, for non-standard thicknesses we can run the rolls through our state of the art splitting machines to create thicknesses from just 1.5mm with a cell/cell or skin/cell finish.

Onsite conversion facilities consist of various log cutters, slitters, bandsaws and oscillating knife, allowing us to convert rolls or sheets of material into finished parts including pads, washers, gaskets or strips - all supplied plain or laminated with a choice of our many self-adhesives or foils.

What is PVC Nitrile Sponge Rubber?

PVC Nitrile sponge rubber is soft and flexible closed cell material made from a blend of Nitrile and PVC polymer compounds.  This material can be used for shock or impact absorption, noise reduction and as a thermal insulator, bening closed cell it can also be used for gas, moisture and air sealing.

Why use PVC Nitrile Sponge Rubber?

PVC Nitrile sponge is manufactured with smooth outer skin and offers a number of properties making it suitable for use to create a watertight seal, as a thermal insulator and to reduce vibration and noise, as well as being impact, heat, UV, Ozone and flame retardant.  PVC Nitrile is safe to use in building and construction applications as it is dust-free, therefore will not affect the air quality.

The Benefits of using PVC Nitrile Sponge Rubber

    • Temperature range of -50°c to +116°c
    • Excellent ozone, weathering and UV light resistance
    • Can be used for thermal insulation
    • Flame Retardant to Class O standards
    • can be manufactured in either plain or self-adhesive backed
    • prevents condensation and corrosion
    • Closed-cell structure  prevents bacteria and moulds build-up

Advantages of using PVC Nitrile Sponge Rubber

One of the advantages of PVC Nitrile is that it is manufactured in a range of sizes, which means they can be ready for immediate despatch, they are also easy to split and convert so if bespoke thicknesses or cut products are required, these can be turned around within a minimal lead time. PVC Nitrile sponge offers moisture, flame, UV and Ozone resistant properties which prevent condensation, corrosion and the growth of bacteria, rot and fungus.

This material has some resistance to chemicals, grease and oil, combined with a working temperature range of -50°C to 116°C and is flammability tested to meet Class O specifications, meaning the material doesn’t burn and flame spread is reduced making it suitable for use in HVAC, refrigerators, building & construction, sealing and pipework insulation.

    Other Grades of Sponge Available

There are different types and grades of sponge rubber available for use within many industries each with its own unique characteristics. Popular types of sponge rubber include:

EPDM sponge rubber is a high-quality material with excellent weathering, UV and ozone resistance, making it ideal for outdoor seating.  EPDM sponge rubber rolls offer a wide operating temperature range, acoustic, thermal and vibration dampening properties and also good mechanical strength and abrasion-resistant properties.   Grades of EPDM include medium, firm, high temp and semi-open cells.

Neoprene sponge rubber is a versatile material, featuring good resilience and resistance to UV and ozone. It has a working temperature range of -40ºc to +115ºc, good chemical stability, and good general resistance to oils and petroleum-based fuels.

Silicone sponge is a resilient material with high-temperature stability, chemically inert and waterproof. Silicone sponge is a closed-cell, available in a range of densities (firmness) it has a number of features that make it suitable for outdoor sealing including Ozone, UV resistance and temperature flexibility, meaning it will not freeze/crack.

Viton sponge is another closed-cell variety of sponge rubber offered by ASG.  It is manufactured with skin on both faces which increases its tear resistance.  It has a wide working temperature range of -25°C to +204°C and good resistance to hydrocarbons, oils, fuels, lubricants, acids, weathering and ozone.

Poron sponge is closed-cell polyurethane sponge rubber, which offers excellent compression resistance, good chemical resistance and longevity.  This material is low out-gassing, non-fogging and will not become brittle and break down over time.

Industrial sponge rubber is a high quality, open-cell natural sponge rubber.  The open cell structure enables excellent compression recovery, but also to form around uneven surfaces, limited absorption and circulation of gas and liquids if required.  It is an excellent choice of material for us as a protective sponge, expansion joints and anti-vibration applications.
