ABS Plastic Washers

ABS Washers

Plastic washers make up a small proportion of the 1000’s of products supplied by Advanced Seals & Gaskets, available in numerous grades, colours, thicknesses, finishes and sheet sizes, one of which includes ABS plastic or Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene.

ABS plastics can be supplied in sheets up to 2500mm x 1250mm in size and thicknesses between 1mm and 6mm, from which ABS plastic washers can be cut. All our washers are manufactured in-house using a combination of a skilled workforce and high-spec machinery, using either our CNC oscillating knife or one of our many presses (for very thin washers).

Our range of machinery means we can manufacture ABS plastic washers to match your specified dimensions in any quantity quickly and efficiently, supplied with a choice of self adhesives or foils, which in return passes on a quality product and a cost saving.

Characteristics of ABS Plastic:

Colours: black/white as standard but others can be made to order

Texture: smooth or various textured options
Thicknesses: 1mm - 6mm

Grades of ABS available:

  • FDA approved sheets; for use in the food industry.
  • High impact resistance; for products that will experience tough handling.
  • Flame retardant options; our fire retardant products have a UL94-V0 fire grade rating
  • Scratch resistant; for products where finish and longevity is important

Temperature Range: -20° C - 80° C (continuous)
Chemical Resistances: Good resistance to dilute acids, dilute alkalis, oils and greases

    What Are ABS Plastic Washers?

ABS plastic is made up of three monomers acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene, which make up this particular thermoplastic - a polymer which can be melted over and over again. These three monomers create a tough and durable material, which can be produced in different variations by adjusting the amounts each compound added or with the addition of additives.

A ‘washer’ is a flat piece of material which is placed between two surfaces or between joints in order to reduce friction and prevent unsteadiness, creating a level surface for nuts, bolts and other fixings to rest on, improving the fit for fixings and can be used as a water or air tight seal. ABS plastic washers are produced using either samples, drawings or dimensions provided by customers, which would detail the Outer Diameter (OD), Internal Diameter (ID) and the Thickness, manufactured in a plain or self-adhesive finish.

    Why Use ABS Plastic Washers?

Our range of ABS plastic washers are manufactured to be able to offer different properties, with ABS demonstrating strength, chemical, thermal stability and resistance to impact and chemical corrosion.

When cut into washers, ABS plastic can be used as air and water tight seals and as a non-corrosive alternative to metal - where the washers are to be used between moving parts, an abrasive resistant ABS plastic can be used for longevity and wear resistance.

ABS plastic washers can be cut and converted into a range of sizes using various techniques including laser cutting, die cutting, sawing and even thermoforming (where the material is heated until it is soft, re-shaped and then left to cool and harden), supplied in either a plain or self-adhesive backed finish with peel-able liner applied to one or both sides. The versatility and robustness of ABS means these washers can be found within automotive parts, as medical devices and within electrical goods.

    Other Types of Plastic Available

Advanced Seals & Gaskets work with a multitude of material manufacturers and suppliers, giving our customers more choice of plastic sheeting - our most popular materials being:

    • PTFE
    • Polycarbonate
    • Polypropylene
    • HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene)
    • PVC
    • Polyester
    • Acetal
    • Acrylic
    • Nylatron

Advantages Of Using ABS Plastic Washers

Some of the many advantages of using ABS plastic include the cost or production and purchasing of the material itself, its strong, impact and shock resistant and sturdy, a material which can not only be melted and re-formed several times, but is also easy to recycle.

Using ABS plastic washers offer a whole host of benefits, not only are they cheaper and lighter in weight in comparison to metal and some sponge options, but also offer more resistance to wear and corrosion (will not rust unlike metal).

Despite being a fairly rigid material, abs plastic washers can still be compressed to create a tight seal and as well as being great for insulation applications as it does not conduct heat or electricity. ABS plastic is made more versatile as it can be manufactured in a range of colours and finishes and also cut, pressed or moulded into bespoke shapes and profiles.

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene washers or spacers can be found in a wide range of commercial and domestic applications and often used in the production of face guards, automotive interiors, medical devices, toys and electrical appliances to name a few.

    Benefits Of Using ABS Plastic

    • Weather resistant
    • Impact resistant
    • Can be melted and re-formed
    • Strong and rigid
    • Can be easily machined, glued and painted
    • Low heat and electricity conductivity for use with electrical insulation
