Conductive Foam Strip

Polyethylene foams such as Conductive Polyethylene are manufactured in block or ‘bun’ form, which are stocked by Advanced Seals and Gaskets ready for converting into products including cut conductive polyethylene foam strips.

These polyethylene materials are amongst some of the most popular and durable material types supplied by ASG and are found utilized in a range of industries and applications usually as converted components such as cut conductive polyethylene foam strips or gaskets tapes and foam tapes, as they are sometimes referred to.

One such grade on offer from ASG in sheet, roll form or converted parts is Conductive Polyethylene, one of many ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) foams supplied for packaging and insulating. Like most other PE foams Conductive PE is manufactured in block form usually at 2 meters by 1 meter in size, which can be joined to achieve customer desired strip length, then using our state of the art in-house conversion facilities, can be split down to as little as 1.5mm thick sheets or rolls of material.

Conductive PE foam strips are all made to order manufactured using state of the art machinery including band saws, strippers, log cutters and even presses depending upon the size and quantity required - for very small strips in high volume runs, a kiss-cut option may also be available for faster production and time efficiency for the end user.

In-house production allows us to closely oversee the whole production process to ensure that we consistently produce high quality, competitively priced conductive polyethylene foam strips. Our on-site laminating service enables us to supply conductive polyethylene foam strips in a choice of finishes including plain or coated on one of both faces with a range of self-adhesives, foils or even laminated to other materials.

What Are Conductive Polyethylene Foam Strips?

Conductive polyethylene foam strips are pieces of material cut to a specific width and length as requested by our customers, in some cases available as continuous rolls or coils to be cut down to the required length by the end user as when needed by the end user, often used in a similar way to a gasket placed between two surfaces to create a seal, provide cushioning or insulation.

Strips of conductive PE foam are made by joining blocks of material together to produce a continuous length, before it is run through a splitter where it is skived or ‘peeled’ off at a desired thickness, and then cut into conductive polyethylene foam strips either using a press, bandsaw or log-cutter (depending on the length and thicknesses needed). There are a number of electrostatic discharge (ESD) strips available from ASG, including those made using Conductive Polyethylene Foam.

This grade of Polyethylene is produced using virtually the same compound and manufacturing process as standard PE foam but has carbon added to the compound mix which produces the deep black colour, a surface resistance of less than 106ohms and high levels of conductivity, designed to allow electrical current to safely pass through, drawing it away from the product it is protecting. Unlike some of the other ESD foams on the market, conductive polyethylene foam strips are permanently conductive and therefore suitable for repeated transport and handling use.

Why Use Conductive Polyethylene Foam Strips?

Strips of conductive polyethylene foam are usually used to provide protection during production, packing and transportation of fragile and expensive items. Additional precautions are needed with electrical static sensitive products which are at risk from becoming unusable if stored or shipped using the incorrect type or inadequate packing type.

Electrical goods and electronic components all naturally have a dielectric nature which makes them prone to damage from surrounding electrostatic charge generated during handling and movement of devices, or where the item is in close proximity to a product which creates ESD (ESD is where a sudden surge of electric discharge between two electrically charged objects caused by contact or friction resulting in an electrical short or dielectric breakdown).

Conductive PE foam strips are an effective way to reduce the risk of ESD as they slowly conduct the charges, allowing them to flow through its cell structure in a controlled manner preventing discharge or shock.

Conductive polyethylene foam strips can be used to fill gaps and irregularities between uneven surfaces, provide a solution to unwanted rattles, noise, vibrations, to seal against air, gas, dust and liquids, and can also be used to cushion between moving parts to reduce friction and damage to components and equipment by preventing static build up.

Benefits Of Using Conductive Polyethylene Foam Strips

    • Permanent ESD protection
    • Ideal for multi repeat use during packaging, storage and in-plant handling applications
    • Quick and controlled transfer of static charge
    • Available in full rolls or cut lengths
    • A soft material which offers cushioning
    • Reduces cost of replacing damaged items
    • Closed cell material protects goods from moisture damage

Advantage Of Using Conductive Polyethylene Foam Strips

Conductive PE foam strips help to maintain a safe environment, save money and protect expensive components as do other ESD foams. A few of the desirable properties demonstrated by conductive polyethylene include strength and resistance to tear, good shock and impact absorption, vibration dampening and resistance to water, grease, solvents and chemicals.

As conductive polyethylene foam strips are made using a closed cell material, they don’t support the growth of mould and bacteria, nor does it allow for moisture absorption. It is odourless, non-toxic (unless ignited) and will not cause chemical corrosion to components or surrounding packing.

As Conductive Polyethylene foams are manufactured in block form, they can be quickly and easily be joined together, split, laminated and converted into conductive polyethylene foam strips in many thicknesses, for added security and protection from impact, movement and most importantly, damage from static charge, therefore saving end-users and manufacturers money on having to replace damaged products and also protects those in contact with the component from static shock.

Applications in which conductive PE strips can be found include medical devices , handheld electronic devices, display units such as LCD, LED lighting and within telecommunications, to name a few.
