EPDM Fabrication

EPDM sponge fabrication

EPDM Fabrication

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd manufacture various fabricated components produced from a range of sponge, foam and rubber materials, one of which is EPDM medium density sponge, sometimes also called EPDM foam.  EPDM sponge fabrications require specialist machinery, usually a selection of saws, drills, buffers and knives.

By choosing ASG for your fabrications, you will also benefit from the use of our CNC oscillating knife which can automatically cut and drill fabricated parts by reading CAD drawings.  EPDM sponge fabrications are often selected as a cheaper alternative to mouldings or extrusions, as they do not require any initial set-up or tooling costs and are used for the production of bespoke shapes, usually required as one-off prototypes or small quantity product runs.

All our EPDM sponge fabrications are made to order and are produced by following samples or drawings provided by customers, taking many forms for example multiple materials laminating to create composite sheets which are then cut down into gaskets, pads and strips or to produce seals with flexible joints or irregular angles.

What are EPDM Sponge Fabrication?

EPDM is an abbreviation of Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer which are the chemical components used to manufacture this sponge.  EPDM sponge is a strong, synthetic material that is closed cell making it an ideal material for internal and external sealing applications where minimal compression is required for the strips to work effectively. An EPDM sponge fabrication is a procedure of turning blocks or sheets of foam, sponge, and rubber into custom made 3D usable shapes.

EPDM sponge fabrications can be created using CNC machines, saws, drills, buffers etc, enabling us to create unique products that usually cannot be produced by one single process, where the item is too big to be produced in one single piece, or where 3D profiles are required such as cubes or cone shapes.

Supplying fabricated parts also allows us to produce composite sheets (laminating multiple layers of different materials together), before cutting out the final shapes.

    Why use EPDM Sponge Fabrication?

EPDM sponge fabrications are can be used to fill gaps and irregularities between two surfaces where a standard profile part will not fit or work, they can also be used to provide a solution to unwanted rattles, noise, vibrations, to seal against air, gas, dust and liquids, and can also be used to cushion between moving parts to reduce friction and damage to components and equipment.

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd have a team dedicated to fabrications and the production of one-offs and complex products to use during design and prototype development or when singular items are required.

EPDM sponge fabrications are often used as a cheaper alternative to mouldings and extrusions for the production of bespoke shapes (as there is no initial die or tooling cost), these are ideal for use as samples or prototypes prior to paying for expensive tooling for mouldings or extrusions for bulk production.

They are also perfect for producing props, signs, displays, packaging case/box inserts with routered out shapes to hold specific items in place.

The Benefits of Using EPDM Sponge Fabrication

    • Noise, vibration, shock and abrasion reduction
    • Flexible with good compression recovery
    • Cost-effective and readily available
    • Naturally compressible to create the perfect seal to control air and water leaks
    • Closed cell structure   prevents bacteria and moulds build-up
    • Excellent properties making it popular for use in a range of industries and applications
    • Easy to convert into a range of products including gaskets, and will hold most adhesives well

The Advantages of Using EPDM Sponge Fabrication

EPDM sponge fabrication is produced using a strong, synthetic material which is closed cell making it an ideal material for internal and external sealing applications where minimal compression is required for the material to work effectively, it has an excellent lifespan even when used outdoors and is free from dust and fibre.

EPDM sponge fabrications can be manufactured in a huge range of sizes and thicknesses, with a choice of foils and self-adhesives applied to one or both faces. For very thick fabricated parts or where a combination of properties is required, the EPDM sponge can be laminated to other materials for use within more specialist applications.

EPDM sponge is a popular choice of material that is air and watertight, ages well without becoming brittle offers good UV resistance and is able to withstand a wide scale of temperatures ranging from -20°C up to a high of 85°C.

It’s an excellent electrical insulation material, as well as having good resistance to ketones, ordinary diluted acids and alkalis, Ozone, UV and weathering as well as its general resistance to abrasion. EPDM foam is also flammability tested to meet FMVSS302 and UL94 HBF standards.

Grades of EPDM Sponge Fabrication Available

ASG stock a variety of other grades and densities of EPDM sponge which can call be used to manufacture gaskets each suited to individual applications. These include firm grade, high temperature and semi-open cell varieties:

High-Temperature EPDM Foam is closed cell and highly flexible even at low temperatures, with an amazing temperature range of -50°c to +128°c.  High-Temperature EPDM foam has many excellent mechanical characteristics including thermal and insulation properties, making this material ideal for many industries and applications including HVAC, Refrigeration, Pipeline, Automotive, White goods and Building & construction, etc.

Semi-Open cell EPDM combines the flexibility of an open cell material with the excellent sealing capabilities of closed-cell types once compressed. Semi-open cell EPDM pads will allow for the ingress of air, dust, moisture until compressed by 80% of their thickness, following this the product becomes water and airtight and behaves as a closed-cell product.

Firm Grade EPDM Foam is a more resilient material that will not compress as much as the standard grades under load, also this material benefits from increased tear strength and suits some of the more demanding applications such as Automotive, White Goods, Marine, Defence, Building and Construction, etc
