Epoxy Glass Sheet

Epoxy Glass Sheet

Epoxy Glass Sheet

Epoxy Glass Sheets of various electrically insulating materials are sourced and stocked by ASG ready to be shipped or converted into finished components. Epoxy Glass sheets are one such material available, identifiable by its green colouration - this is a versatile composite product which is manufactured in various grades, in a choice sheet sizes and in thicknesses of up to 100mm.  These sheets of material can be converted in-house by us to produce a range of other finished products such as washers, gaskets, pads or strips  using one of our many in-house presses, slitters, bandsaws or oscillating knife.

What are Epoxy Glass Sheets?

Epoxy glass sheets are produced in varying shades of green (depending on grade), made by compressing multiple layers of fibreglass which are then impregnated with epoxy resin creating strong rigid sheets or plates of material .   Epoxy glass has a transparent finish, which is hard and brittle, offering good mechanical strength and temperature resistance as well as excellent electrical insulation properties, which mean it can be used to restrict the flow of electric current, by supporting electrical conductors - without allowing the current to pass through.

Why use Epoxy Glass Sheets?

Epoxy Glass sheets and the components cut from them are usually used for the purpose of electrical insulation.  Electrically insulating materials like Epoxy Glass are used to provide a barrier to restrict the flow of electrical current, protecting electrical conductors from coming into contact with people or tools during installation, repairs or when an electrical appliance or device is being used.

Electrical insulation materials also prevent electrical arcing (electrical current flows through the air between two conductors, as a result of the electrical breakdown of gas that produces an ongoing electrical discharge) and are used in other electrical insulation applications.   Epoxy Glass sheets of material are  strong, tough and highly machinable, which are capable of withstanding temperatures up to 180°C depending on the grade taken.

Epoxy Glass sheets are available in a large range of thicknesses from 0.2mm through to 100mm and also in rod or tube form, all of which can be machined using a range of drilling, routing and CNC milling processes - very thin sheets can also be converted using presses.

Alternative Types of Electrical Insulation Materials Available

Advanced Seals & Gaskets work with a multitude of material manufacturers, giving our customers more choice of sheet and ensuring we can offer a solution to just about any application, our most popular electrical insulation materials include:

Kapton - is a polyamide film which offers a combination of mechanical and tear strength along with chemical, electrical and thermal properties that enables the gasket to withstand vibration and extreme temperatures in demanding environments.

Leatheroid - is a grey/blue coloured paper gasket material, also sometimes called Elephantide.  This material is used within the electrical industry to insulate hot elements.

MICA - is a mineral based sheeting material which has excellent mechanical performances, is resistant to chemicals and provides electrical and therm insulation.  MICA gaskets are often used to replace asbestos as they can withstand extremely high temperatures of up to 1000℃.

MYLAR is an extremely strong, flexible polyester film.  MYLAR is an excellent insulation material with dielectric strength, moisture resistance and is an excellent insulation material.

Nomex can be manufactured using nomex paper or nomex board, it can withstand high temperatures, has high mechanical and dielectric strength, and is  an excellent insulation material for all kinds of electrical equipment and applications.

Presspahn is a brown coloured material,  manufactured using kraft wood pulp.  Presspahn sheets have excellent physical and mechanical properties, generally used as electrical insulation.

SRBF is resin bonded fibre material which is tough and rigid, with an operating temperature of 120℃, low water absorption and is resistant to wear, impact chemicals.

SRBP (synthetic resin bonded paper) is manufactured using layers of paper and synthetic resins.  This material is suited to high and medium voltage application.  SRBP has good mechanical and excellent electrical insulation properties, with low water absorption.

Valox is an excellent electrical insulation material which also offers flame retardant properties.

PTFE is a non- conductive plastic material used to produce electrical insulation sheets.  PTFE sheets are suitable for high temperature applications and have a high melting temperature.  This material has excellent dielectric properties and can be often found used in circuit boards.

PVC is a tough, lightweight abrasion, chemical and moisture resistant material which has good dielectric strength making it a great material to use for electrical insulation applications.

Benefits of Using Epoxy Glass

  • Temperature stability up to 180 °C
  • Electrically  insulating
  • Available in many grades including chemical resistant and flame resistant
  • Dimensional stability
  • High mechanical strength
  • Highly machinable

Advantages of Using Epoxy Glass Sheets

Epoxy Glass sheets are one of the most popular resin materials used for the production of electrical insulation components.  The material itself acts as an excellent electrical insulator protecting electrical devices and appliances from short circuiting, dust and moisture.   As well as electrical applications, Epoxy Glass is often used as an alternative to carbon steel, due to its corrosion resistance, chemical resistance, low thermal conductivity, light weight and desirable mechanical properties.  Sheets of Epoxy glass are available in a number of grades, all a shade of green, each offering its own unique set of properties which can include high chemical resistance, V0 self-extinguishing and flame retardancy properties, high temperature resistance and varying levels of machinability.  When used for insulation within the electronics industry epoxy glass components cut from these sheets are found used in integrated circuits, transistors and hybrid circuits, making printed circuit boards and as insulators within heavy transport, mechanical engineering, mining and construction.  Epoxy Glass sheets can be taken in full or alternatively, we can convert them into a multitude of bespoke finished products including washers, pads, strips and complex gaskets.
