Presspahn Pads

Presspahn Pads

Amongst the many sponge and rubber pads supplied by ASG, there are also a number of pads designed for specific applications such as our electrical insulation jointing.   One such range of products from our vast catalogue are a selection of Fibre Joining materials, each of which consists of a varied choice of material types and their own unique set of properties.

One of these materials is our Presspahn Pads, also know in the industry as pressboard, press paper, presspahn transformer insulation paper and elephantide. Presspahn fibre jointing is often used for the production of electrical insulation gaskets as the material doesn’t allow the free flow of electrical current,  protecting electrical conductors from coming into contact with people or tools during installation, repairs or when an electrical appliance or device is being used.

Presspahn Fibre Jointing materials are manufactured in a paper form on a roll available in thicknesses from 0.13mm to 1mm thick and also in rigid board from 0.5mm to 25mm.  These materials can be taken as a full roll or sheet, for conversion at a later date or alternatively converted into finished pads using one of our many on-site saws, presses or our oscillating knife, supplied plain or coated in a choice of self-adhesives or foils.

    What are Presspahn Pads?

Commonly many people will naturally choose sponge or rubber when looking for a compressible material for sealing and insulating applications as their material of choice, however in many cases,  a ‘fibre’ based material could also be a suitable option.

Fibre jointing material is made up of fibre strands held together with a resin which is then compressed under extreme pressure to create the rigidity and usable material which can be cut into pads. When buying Presspahn Pads from Advanced Seals & Gaskets, customers have the option of taking them as standard squares or rectangles with the added choice of radius corners and also have circular or oval-shaped pads or ‘discs’ in a range of thicknesses.

Manufacturing these Presspahn Pads in-house also means we are able to give customers the option of taking in in a plain or self adhesive finish.   A fibre jointing material like Presspahn is one formulated to use as a filler or gasket, creating  a barrier, restricting the free-flow of electrical current.

    Why use Presspahn Fibre Jointing?

With a raised awareness of environmental and health & safety issues, more care is taken when manufacturing electrical equipment and machinery and the components used within them.

Presspahn Pads are produced using electrical grade kraft wood pulp, designed as a surface insulation material on cellulose for insulation class A and can withstand high heat exposure for short periods of time.  Presspahn materials are available in paper and board form, in a choice of different thicknesses.

Presspahn Pads and boards are cut into parts such as gaskets for use as electrical barriers, restricting the free flow of current, protecting electrical conductors from coming into contact with tools and people during usage, repairs and installation.    Pads cut from Presspahn papers can be found include insulation within cables carrying electrical current or signals such as telephone cables, power cables, capacitors and even submarine power cables, whereas those made using presspahn boards are more often found as transformer boards in oil-filled transformers as an insulating structure.

Pressboard Pads are often taken for their high chemical purity, mechanical strength and optimum oil impregnability.  These properties make pressboard perfect for us within oil-filled power transformers and distribution transformers as well as an insulation material for electric machines and capacitors.

Other Types of Fibre Jointing Materials available

    • Betaflex is a cellulose based fibre material, which is made using a nitrile binder giving it excellent tensile strength,  low compressibility, good elastic recovery and erosion resistance.   Betaflex is used widely in the industrial and automotive sectors due to its resistance to oils. petrols , diesel and even antifreeze.
    • Ceramic Fibre material is constructed using ceramic fibres and an organic binder, designed for extreme temperature applications reaching up to 1250℃.    Ceramic fibre roll materials have excellent strength and flexibility, excellent insulating properties and thermal resistance.
    • Gasket Paper has a high resistance to petrol, oil and water, therefore often utilised within automotive applications (within fuel/oil pumps and filters).  It is not recommended for indust

Benefits of using Presspahn Fibre Jointing

    • Can withstand high heat for short periods of time high
    • Utilised in 105ºC rated (Class A) electrical applications
    •  Excellent mechanical strength and absorption characteristics
    • Can be punched, folded and cut
    • Good machinability
    • Available in rigid board or flexible paper

    Advantages of Using Presspahn Pads

Presspahn Pads can be found used within transformers and other power transmission equipment offering an excellent insulating structure.  These pads offer properties including resistance to ageing, insulation performance and mechanical properties and is available in a choice of rigid board and paper components.

Presspahn Fibre Jointing can be taken in full rolls or sheets of material for conversion into pads at a later date, or alternatively sawn, routered and pressed into a range of products here onsite at Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd and supplied as cut parts such as pads, gaskets, washers and strips.  During the formulation of the raw material, the compound is treated through several non-chemical processes, ensuring maximum purity free from fillers and impurities allowing for the material to be used in even the more stringent applications.

Presspahn Pads offer excellent mechanical strength and oil penetration therefore suitable for both dry and oil based transformers and other equipment and can be used across a range of currents and voltages.  Some of the applications in which Presspahn Pads can be found include insulation within cables carrying electrical current or signals such as telephone cables, power cables, capacitors and even submarine power cables, whereas the pads cut from presspahn fibre jointing boards are more often found as transformer boards in oil-filled transformers as an insulating structure.
