Flame Retardant Polyethylene Strip

Flame Retardant Polyethylene Foam Strips

Flame Retardant Polyethylene Strip

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd are leading UK producers and suppliers of cut flame retardant polyethylene foam strips, converting hundreds of blocks into finished products each month.

ASG has the advantage of having a large storage space enabling us to hold stocks of blocks ‘buns’, rolls and sheets of Flame Retardant Polyethylene, in a range of densities all ready for conversion and therefore allowing us to keep lead times as low as possible.

Other references used to describe this material are Flame Retardant block foam, FR-PE foam, flame retardant polyethylene sponge or LDPE-FR (low density Polyethylene) foam. Blocks of Flame Retardant Polyethylene foam can be split down to thicknesses starting from as little as 1.5mm, in 2 metre x 1 metre sized sheets, or as rolls which are made by joining blocks of material together prior to splitting them, both of which can be used to further convert into flame retardant polyethylene foam strips or foam tapes in virtually any width and length.

Flame retardant polyethylene foam strips, gasket tapes or sealing strips or foam tapes as they are commonly know, are all made to order, manufactured using state-of-the-art machinery including band saws, strippers, log cutters and even presses depending upon the size and quantity required - for very small strips in high volume runs, a kiss-cut option may also be available for faster production and time efficiency for the end user.

In-house production allows us to closely oversee the whole production process to ensure that we consistently produce high quality, competitively priced flame retardant polyethylene strips, with our on-site laminating service enabling us to supply flame retardant polyethylene foam strips in choice of finishes including plain or coated on one of both faces with a range of self-adhesives, foils or even laminated to other materials.

What Are Flame Retardant Polyethylene Foam Strips?

Flame retardant polyethylene foam strips are pieces of PE foam which have been cut to a specific width and length as requested by our customers, in some cases available as continuous rolls or coils to be cut down into small pieces as when needed by the end user, often for use in a similar way to a gasket placed between two surfaces to create a seal, provide cushioning or insulation.

Polyethylene foams are part of the Thermoplastic foam family, it’s a chemically cross-linked foam, with a number of resistances and insulation properties as well as being available in a variety of grades (standard, EEV, EVA, Conductive and Anti-static) and densities. Densities in which flame retardant polyethylene foam strips are available include 25kg, 30kg, 45kg, 60kg, 100kg - the density of the foam is measured as the weight or mass of the foam across its entire volume or within a cubic meter (m3).

The denser the foam, the heavier and more compact the material is, the differences in density can vary some of the properties of the material and how it performs. All of these grades are manufactured in 2meter x 1meter sized blocks, which can be easily joined and split into continuous rolls or sheets of material, which can be cut down into flame retardant polyethylene foam strips and tapes.

Why Use Flame Retardant Polyethylene Foam Strips?

Foam strips such as those made from Flame Retardant Polyethylene can be used to fill gaps and irregularities between uneven surfaces, provide a solution to unwanted rattles, noise, vibrations, to seal against air, gas, dust and liquids, create a fire proof seal, and can also be used to cushion between moving parts to reduce friction and damage to components and equipment.

All grades polyethylene foam strips have the same extensive list of desirable properties - a low compression set, are resistant to water, oils, chemicals and weather, with the option of additives being added to produce other grades and thus additional properties.

When Flame Retardant Polyethylene is being manufactured a Flame Retardant additive is added during the compounding process, which creates a slower burning material or even one that will self-extinguish when exposed to open flames, both of which can help reduce the spread of the fire.

Other sought after properties these flame retardant polyethylene foam strips can offer include resistance to wear and tear, Ozone, UV, a smooth closed cell surface which doesn’t support mold or fungus growth and a working temperature range of -60°C - +90°C.

Advantages Of Using Flame Retardant Polyethylene Foam Strips

Polyethylene Foams are often the preferred choice for the production of flame retardant polyethylene foam strips as the material is more cost effective in comparison to other foams and sponges.

Most grades of Polyethylene, including Flame Retardant, are usually readily available from stock, allowing for production of strips and tapes to be supplied with a minimal conversion and lead time. As the raw polyethylene material is manufactured and cured in block form, it allows us the options to quickly and easily split sheets and rolls into bespoke thicknesses starting at just 1.5mm ready for further conversion into flame retardant polyethylene foam strips. Polyethylene foams are manufactured in various grades therefore customers benefit from a number of advantages and a choice of properties allowing the material to be utilised in numerous industries and applications from dust seals and flame retardant gasket tapes.

Flame Retardant Polyethylene foam is a man-made, closed cell material, with a closed cell structure which can be used in sealing applications against liquid, gases, particles and even as flame retardant insulation polyethylene foam strips, demonstrating a high resistance to wear and tear, Ozone, UV, resilience to repeated impact and a working temperature range of -60°C to +90°C.

These foams also offer a number of excellent mechanical characteristics including noise and vibration control, for shock absorption and can be used for thermal insulation.
