    What is Leatheroid Electrical Insulation?

Leatheroid electrical insulation is also known as Leatheroid paper or Elephantidae. It’s a cellulose material very similar to vulcanized fibre and is prepared using unsized cotton rag paper and mineral acid.

Leatheroid electrical insulation is grey/blue in colour, manufactured in continuous rolls as standard and comes in a wide range of thicknesses from 0.1mm to 1mm. Leatheroid has excellent insulation properties and is used extensively in the electronics industry to insulate hot elements such as contact terminals.

Leatheroid electrical insulation strips are often used in industrial and domestic electrical appliances and as an insulator in transformers and motors.

Why use Leatheroid Electrical Insulation Strips?

Leatheroid electrical insulation strips are pieces of material cut to a specific length and supplied to our customers for use as required. Common uses for our strips include closing gaps or irregularities between surfaces, preventing unwanted noise and vibrations, and creating seals.

A flexible product that can block electrical current, Leatheroid is frequently used to create seals and act as a barrier in electronic products.

    Different Types of Electrical Insulation

Here at Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd, we work closely with a network of suppliers and manufacturers to ensure we offer a wide variety of products while keeping lead-times to a minimum. Electrical insulation materials available from us include:

    • Epoxy Glass: This material is green coloured and offers good mechanical strength. It also offers good chemical, electrical and radiation resistance, low moisture absorption and a working temperature of up to +120℃.
    • Kapton: Kapton is a polyamide film that offers strength as well as chemical, electrical and thermal properties. This enables products manufactured using Kapton to withstand vibration and extreme temperatures.
    • Leatheroid: Leatheroid is a grey/blue coloured paper material, also sometimes called Elephantidae. This material is often used within the electrical industry to insulate hot elements.
    • MICA: Often used to replace asbestos, MICA is a mineral-based sheeting material that offers excellent mechanical performances, is resistant to chemicals and provides excellent electrical and thermal insulation.
    • MYLAR: A is an extremely strong, flexible polyester film. MYLAR is an excellent insulation material offering moisture resistance an excellent insulation.
    • Nomex: Manufactured using Nomex paper or Nomex board, it can withstand high temperatures, has high mechanical and dielectric strength, and is an excellent insulation material.
    • Presspahn: Manufactured using kraft wood pulp. Presspahn sheets have excellent physical and mechanical properties and are generally used as electrical insulation.
    • SRBF: This material is a resin bonded fibre material that is tough and rigid, with an operating temperature of 120℃. It offers low water absorption and is resistant to wear, impact and chemicals.
    • SRBP: Also known as synthetic resin bonded paper, SRBP is manufactured using layers of paper and synthetic resins. This material is suited to high and medium voltage application.
    • Valox: This material is an excellent electrical insulation material that also offers flame retardant properties.
    • PTFE: Often found in circuit boards, PTFE is a non-conductive plastic material used to produce electrical insulation sheets. PTFE sheets are suitable for high-temperature applications and have a high melting temperature.
    • PVC: PVC is a tough, lightweight material offering chemical, abrasion and moisture resistance.

Benefits of using Leatheroid Electrical Insulation Strips?

    • Excellent electrical strength
    • Mechanical resistance
    • Highly durable
    • Flexible
    • Increased electrical strength (12kv per millimetre) when bonded with polyester film
    • High dielectric strength
    • Cost effective
