Mylar Pads

Mylar Pads

Within the extensive range of electrical insulation products provided by Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd, we offer precision-cut pads made from Mylar materials. ASG stocks and converts various electrical insulation materials, including papers, resins, laminates, and plastics, many of which are suitable for electrical applications. Among these materials is Mylar, also known as BoPET (Biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate), Melinex, and Hostaphan, which is a polyester film crafted from stretched polyethylene terephthalate (PET).

Mylar electrical insulation films are remarkably thin, measured in microns rather than millimeters like other plastics. They come in a range of 12 to 500 microns and are produced in roll form, with a width of 914mm and lengths ranging from 25 to 200 meters, depending on thickness. These rolls serve as the source material from which we can precision-cut pads to meet specific requirements.

    What are Mylar Pads?

Our customers enjoy the flexibility to design their Mylar pads according to their specific needs. These pads can be created as squares or rectangles, offering the option of radius corners. Alternatively, they can take the shape of circles or ovals, referred to as 'discs,' available in a variety of thicknesses.

In-house manufacturing provides the added advantage of offering customers a choice between plain or self-adhesive finishes for their Mylar pads. The Mylar material itself is a white-colored, heat-resistant polyester film, also known as BoPET (Biaxially-oriented polyethylene terephthalate). This flexible film boasts exceptional dielectric strength and resists moisture and chemicals (except for alcohol), remaining non-brittle during regular use.

Like other electrical insulating products, Mylar pads serve the purpose of impeding the flow of electric current. They provide support to electrical conductors while preventing the current from passing through, ensuring effective electrical insulation.

    Why use Mylar Pads?

Pads serve as gap fillers and barriers, functioning much like gaskets. Mylar pads find their prime applications in various sectors, including magnetic media, imaging, graphics, and packaging. However, they are predominantly employed in electronic and electrical fields as essential insulating components.

Mylar electrical pads are renowned for their exceptional aging resistance, possessing strength, flexibility, high tensile strength, durability, and dimensional stability. They also exhibit low moisture absorption, excellent dielectric properties, and impressive thermal resistance, capable of withstanding temperatures ranging from -70°C to +150°C.

The versatility of Mylar extends to its availability in both pre-cut pads and full rolls or sheets. This flexibility empowers customers and end users to cut components according to their specific requirements, ensuring optimum utilization of this valuable material.

    Benefits of Using Mylar Pads

    • Versatile and durable multipurpose PET plastic film

    • Excellent resistance to water and most chemicals (not alcohol)

    • Operating temperature range of -70°C to +150°C

    • impact and tear resistant

    • Electrically insulating

    • Pads available in thickness of 23 to 500 microns

Other Types of Electrical Insulation Materials Available

Advanced Seals & Gaskets collaborates with esteemed material manufacturers, expanding choices for customers seeking various electrical insulation materials:

Epoxy Glass: A green material known for its mechanical strength, excellent chemical, electrical, and radiation resistance, low moisture absorption, and a broad working temperature range of up to +120°C.

Kapton: Comprising a polyamide film, it combines impressive mechanical and tear strength with chemical, electrical, and thermal properties. Kapton can endure extreme temperatures and vibrations in demanding environments.

Leatheroid: A grey/blue paper gasket material, often referred to as Elephantide, utilized in the electrical industry for insulating hot elements.

MICA: A mineral-based sheet material known for its remarkable mechanical performance, resistance to chemicals, and its electrical and thermal insulation properties. MICA gaskets are a preferred asbestos replacement, withstanding temperatures up to 1000°C.

    Advantages of Using Mylar Pads

Mylar pads are versatile electrical insulation components, ideal for printing, packaging, sealing, and electrical applications. Their outstanding features encompass resistance to moisture and chemicals, a wide operating temperature range (-70°C to +150°C), gas-sealing capabilities, and exceptional strength, flexibility, durability, and longevity.

These pads are available in various thicknesses (23 to 500 microns), roll sizes (25 to 200 meters), and multiple grades, including a new flame retardant variant, suitable for conversion into custom pads. The rough surface of Mylar aids in handling, conversion, and adhesive adhesion before conversion. Mylar pads find applications in cable insulation, heating elements, solar panels, motors, and aerospace components.
