Polycarbonate Washers

Using one of hundreds of stock and non-standard materials, ASG are able to supply bespoke washers, not only from sponge and rubber materials, but also using a range of plastics in various grades and colours.  One type of plastic is Polycarbonate,  Polycarbonate (PC) plastic is part of a group of thermoplastics containing ‘carbonate groups’ in their chemical structure, making them strong and tough materials for use within engineering applications.Polycarbonate plastic is visibly clear (transparent), and manufactured in sheet form at thicknesses between 0.7mm to 101mm, in sheet sizes up to 3050mm by 2050mm, from which washers can be cut.  All our washers are manufactured in-house using a combination of a skilled workforce and high-spec machinery, using either our CNC oscillating knife or one of our many presses (for very thin washers), supplied in a plain or self adhesive backed finish. Polycarbonate Plastic washers can be easily machined, thermoformed and even moulded to produce bespoke profiles for your application.

    What are Polycarbonate Washers?

A Polycarbonate washer is a flat ring shaped piece of material, which is placed between two surfaces or between joints in order to reduce friction and prevent unsteadiness, creating a level surface for nuts, bolts and other fixings to rest on, improving the fit for fixings and can be used as a water or air tight seal.  Polycarbonate  washers are produced using either samples, drawings or dimensions provided by  customers, which would detail the Outer Diameter (OD), Internal Diameter (ID) and the Thickness, manufactured in a plain or self-adhesive finish.

    Why use Polycarbonate Washers?

Polycarbonate is a thermoplastic material, meaning it can be melted and reformed repeatedly - with this particular grade benefiting from the addition of carbonate chemicals within the compound creating an extremely strong material, resistant to impact.  Polycarbonate Plastics are so tough, they are often used as a lightweight alternative to glass - offering around 200x more impact resistance!!  Polycarbonate plastic sheets can be made in a variety of colours, but will remain transparent, a natural feature of this material.

Polycarbonate washers absorb little moisture, offer excellent chemical resistance, are flame retardant and are not prone to impact damage.  Since it has many desirable features, it has been adapted for many uses in place of glass, metals,  acrylic, and other materials.  Polycarbonate washers are easy to machine into washers which can often be found used within electronics, lighting, automotive and aircraft applications.

    Other Types of Plastic Available

Advanced Seals & Gaskets work with a multitude of material manufacturers and suppliers, giving our customers more choice of plastic washers - our most popular materials being:

    • PTFE
    • PVC
    • Nylon
    • Polypropylene
    • HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene)
    • ABS
    • Polyester
    • Acetal
    • Acrylic
    • Nylatron

    Benefits of using Polycarbonate Washers

    • Can be manufactured in a range of transparent colours
    • Resistant to chemicals and flame
    • Available in bespoke sizes
    • Impact resistant - up to 200x more than glass
    • Weather resistant
    • Good machinability

    Advantages of Using Polycarbonate Washers

There are countless advantages to using Polycarbonate washers making it suitable for use in a range of industries. The most common use of Polycarbonate washers  are within outdoor applications such as components within skylights, electrical equipment or appliances, automotive and aircraft.

Polycarbonate washers absorb little moisture, offer excellent chemical and heat resistance, are flame retardant,  and are not prone to impact damage, they are also lightweight, non corrosive therefore a great alternative to metal fixings.  Being a thermoplastic material, Polycarbonate washers are reusable, not only can they be melted down and re-formed, they are also highly recyclable.
