Polyester Foam Gaskets

Polyester Foam Gaskets

Gaskets cut from polyurethane foams are one of many products manufactured and supplied by Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd.  Just one of these gasket materials is Polyester Polyurethane, also referred to as Polyester Urethane Foam, Ester Based Polyurethane Foam and Esterfoam.  Polyester PU foams are often used to manufactured gaskets as the material is a flexible foam that exhibits high tensile strength and chemical resistance.

In comparison to Polyester foam gaskets, those made using Polyester foam are  generally more rigid, stronger, and supportive, with physical differences including a glittery sparkle in appearance and feel rougher and more dense to the touch. Ester foam gaskets can not just be converted from standard grade Polyester Foam, but can also be manufactured to order in anti-static, conductive electrostatic dissipative (ESD) and Flame Retardant (FR). Polyester Polyurethane foam is manufactured in very large master blocks or ‘buns’ usually ranging from around 2 to 2.5meters in length, , 1  to 2 metres in width and 175 to 1260 mm in thickness, which are held in stock from which gaskets can be cut.

Polyester PU foam gaskets are manufactured using drawings or samples provided by our customers, with whom we work closely to ensure the final product is to their exact specification providing samples where needed.  From a simple square picture frame gasket, to a more complete profile with cut-outs, notches or bolt holes - we can offer a solution. Whether it’s a one off sample or a multi-thousand run, we have a machine to quickly and accurately produce perfectly formed recon foam gaskets in a range of sizes, these include various types of presses, CNC and kiss cut machines. Our Polyester Polyurethane foam gaskets can be produced plain or with a choice of finishes including foils, self adhesives or laminated to other materials, depending on the size and quantity of the gasket, they can be supplied as loosely packed parts, or kiss-cut on rolls for quicker and easier application.

What are Polyester Polyurethane Foam Gaskets?

Polyester  foam gaskets can take the form of strips, pads or intricately cut pieces of material placed between two surfaces to fill gaps and to create a low pressure seal against the intrusion of dust and debris.   Polyester Polyurethane Foam is a member of the polymer family, it is also known as Polyester Foam or Ester Foam, a flexible material which produces gaskets with a high tensile strength and chemical resistance, offering a greater strength and rigidity in comparison to Polyether.  Polyester Polyurethane is manufactured in a charcoal colour as standard, formulated and manufactured using a combination of polyester polyols, catalysts and blowing agents which create the foam open cell texture.  During the manufacturing process,  additives can be introduced which will enable the Polyester Foam gaskets to meet various fire code standards, as well as antimicrobial, anti-static, conductive and/or electrostatic dissipative (ESD).

Why Use Polyester PU Foam Gaskets?

Polyester Polyurethane foam gaskets are very similar in appearance to those cut using Polyether foams, but are often selected for applications which require a higher level of chemical resistance.  Polyester Foam gaskets are more resistant to hydrocarbons, alcohols, stretching and tearing, they have a fine open cell structure which is uniform in appearance and permeable to air and water, whilst giving it a higher viscosity rate, abrasion and cut resistance.

When used in filtration applications,  thickness of the foam used will also impact the efficiency of the gasket filtration capacity as the thicker the foam, the less air or fluid that is allowed to flow through the foam - even more so when the material is under compression as the pores will decrease in size therefore reducing the amount of air and liquid passing through the product.  Polyester PU foam gaskets have a fairly high tensile strength, but not as high as standard polyethylene foams, and can be used in environments which have a temperature range of around -30 to +110 ºC.

Polyester Foams gaskets  can be cut into bespoke shapes and sizes where they are used in applications such as filtration, sound and vibration absorption, protective packaging and medical equipment.

    Available Grades of Polyurethane

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd work with a number of material manufacturers, giving our customers more choice when looking for polyurethane foams , our most popular grades being:

    • Acoustic
    • Egg box
    • Pick & Pluck
    • HLB
    • Basotech
    • Polyether
    • Recon
    • Retic

Benefits of Using Polyester Polyurethane Foam

    • Compressibility
    • Cushioning & Insulation
    • Light-weight
    • Low thermal conductivity
    • Low water vapor transmission
    • Mildew-resistance
    • Sound absorption/Vibration dampening

Advantages of Using Polyester Polyurethane Foam Gaskets

Polyester foams and the gaskets cut from them are highly durable, offering a range of attractive properties and characteristics for use in many applications.  Just a few of these features include the foams' open cell structure making Polyester a breathable material meaning the gaskets allow air to circulate throughout their  structure, also  offering excellent compressibility,  meaning they will bounce back and recover quickly from repeated loading, making  them a great choice of materials for cushioning applications.

The Polyester and components including gaskets cut from them are  flexible, with a high tensile properties and tear resistance, resistance to mould, mildew and fungus growth as well as grease oil water and temperature with  working temperature range of around -30°C to +110°C. Polyester PU foam gaskets can be used in applications where there is contact or exposure to gasses including oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide whilst its fine cell structure gives the material less flex resulting in a better shock absorbing product.

During the raw material production Polyester Foam compounds can be treated with agents which produce a pink coloured polyester, also known as Pink Anti-static foam, which is another grade we can use for gasket production.  This Pink Anti-static foam dissipates electro-static charges in sensitive electronic equipment or instruments. Just some of the ways in which Polyester Polyurethane gaskets can be found used include acoustic and soundproofing applications, as protective packaging and as water or air filters.
