Foam Strip

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd can convert many materials into strips, including various grades of Polyether Polyurethane Foam.   As with other PU foams, Polyether foam strips are suited to a wide range of applications as it’s a highly versatile material offering more resistance to oxidation and ageing in comparison to most other rubber and foams.

Polyether Polyurethane foam is manufactured in very large master blocks or ‘buns’ usually ranging from around 2 to 2.5meters in length, 1  to 2 metres in width and 175 to 1260 mm in thickness, which are held in stock from which we can convert sheets and rolls at various thicknesses starting from as little as 1.5mm from which strips and tapes can be cut.

Our foam strips are all made to order, manufactured using state of the art machinery including band saws, strippers, log cutters and even presses depending upon the size and quantity required - for very small strips in high volume runs, a kiss-cut option may also be available for faster production and time efficiency for the end user.

In-house production allows us to closely oversee the whole production process to ensure that we consistently produce high quality, competitively priced strips  Our on-site laminating service enables us to supply Polyether  PU Foam strips in a choice of finishes including plain or coated on one of both faces with a

What are Polyether PU Foam Strips?

Polyether PU foam strips are pieces of material cut to a specific width and length as requested by our customers, in some cases available as continuous rolls or coils to be cut down to the required length by the end user as when needed by the end user, often used in a similar way to a gasket placed between two surfaces to create a seal, provide cushioning or insulation.  Strips of Polyether PU foam are made by running the blocks of material through a splitter where it is skived or ‘peeled’ off into sheets or rolls at the  desired thickness, and then cut into strips at measured widths either using a press, bandsaw or log-cutter, the process used will depend on the length, strips thickness and quantity of strips needed.

Polyurethane foams are just one of many members of the polymer family, with Polyether being a soft, open cell, low density variant, available in grey or white often used in low cost applications.  Polyether PU foams are formulated and manufactured using a combination of polyether polyols, catalysts and blowing agents which create the foam open cell texture.  During the manufacturing process, further additives can be added to the formulation in order to produce Polyether foam with additional properties such as flame retardancy, anti-static, anti-bacterial and many more.

    Why use Polyether Foam Strips?

Polyether Polyurethane Foams strips of material look very much like those made from Polyester Foam, but are softer, lightweight and don't have the rough feel or sparkly appearance.  Polyether raw materials are manufactured as large blocks of material which can be easily sawn and split down to produce strips of material which can be supplied in a plain or self adhesive finish.

Polyether Foam strips have an open cell structure which is uniform in appearance,  is permeable to air, the thickness of the foam used will impact the efficiency of the strip filtration capacity as the thicker the foam, the less air is allowed to flow through the foam - even more so when the strips of material are under compression as the pores will decrease in size therefore reducing the amount of air and liquid passing through the product and also increasing the amount of dust and debris it catches.

Unlike many other strips which are used to seal against moisture ingress, Polyether foam strips and tapes are used more for dust filtration or anti vibration applications.   Polyether foam strips can be taken by customers in precut lengths or in longer coils of material where they can cut them down to the desires length as and when required.

Polyether foam strips have a number of desirable properties including excellent compressibility,  meaning they will bounce back and recover quickly, this compressibility makes it a great choice of materials for cushioning and other repetitive impact applications.  Polyether foam strips are flexible with high tensile properties and tear resistance, resistance to mould, mildew and fungus growth as well as grease oil water and temperature with working temperature range of around -20°C to +120°C.   Rigid Polyether Polyurethane foam is perfect in applications such as cushioning, vibration dampening, heat insulation or surface protection.

    Available grades of Polyurethane

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd work with a number of material manufacturers, giving our customers more choice when looking for polyurethane foams , our most popular grades being:

    • Acoustic
    • Egg box
    • Pick & Pluck
    • HLB
    • Basotech
    • Polyester
    • Recon
    • Retic

Benefits of using Polyether Polyurethane Foam

    • Compressibility
    • Cushioning
    • Light-weight
    • Low thermal conductivity
    • Low water vapor transmission
    • Mildew-resistance
    • Resiliency
    • Sound absorption/Vibration dampening

Advantages of using Polyether Polyurethane Foam

Our polyether foam strips are highly durable, versatile offering a vast range of desirable attributes as well as being cost effective allowing them to be used across several industries and applications.  Our Polyether Foam strips are available in grey or white colour options, being an open cell foam, strips made from Polyether materials are breathable  meaning they allow air to circulate throughout its structure.

Polyether foam strips offer excellent compressibility,  meaning they will bounce back and recover quickly from repeated loading and impact, this compressibility makes it a great choice of materials for cushioning applications and sealing around doors where they will be repeatedly opened and closed.

Polyether materials are flexible with high tensile properties and tear resistance, resistance to mould, mildew and fungus growth as well as grease oil water and temperature meaning strips will work within a temperature range of around -20°C to +120°C.

It’s soft composition makes the strops ideal for use within sportswear, medical devices and more popularly packaging.  Due to the open cell structure of this particular foam, it doesn’t hold moisture, is quick drying and allows some airflow, characteristics which are suitable for outdoor seating, filtration, speaker foams, etc.  Polyether Polyurethane foam and the strips made from this material can be found used in a range of sound and vibration dampening applications, cushioning, sealing, impact or bumper pads and even seals or gaskets within aerospace, automotive, machinery and appliances manufacturing.
