Poron Gasket

Gaskets are one of Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd’s most popular products, which are all produced on site using stocks of material sourced from across the world allowing us to offer customers more choice when looking for suitable materials for their gasketting needs.  One material from our range of sponge from which gaskets can be cut is Poron Sponge Rubber.

Poron sponge is manufactured at continuous roll lengths  in a range of thicknesses from 0.53 mm to 12.7 mm, with a skin finish on both faces from which gaskets are cut or pressed.  Poron Sponge gaskets are manufactured using drawings or samples provided by our customers, with whom we work closely to ensure the final product is to their exact specification providing samples where needed.

From a simple square picture frame gasket, to a more complete profile with cut-outs, notches or bolt holes - we can offer a solution. Whether it’s a one off sample or a multi-thousand run, we have a machine to quickly and accurately produce perfectly formed poron sponge gaskets in a range of sizes, these include various types of presses, CNC and kiss cut machines.  Our poron gaskets can be produced plain or with a choice of finishes including foils, self adhesives or laminated to other materials, depending on the size and quantity of the gasket, they can be supplied as loosely packed parts, or kiss-cut on rolls for quicker and easier application.

What are Poron Sponge Rubber Gaskets?

Poron Sponge is a closed cell microcellular urethane foam manufactured by casting and curing foamed urethane compound at various thicknesses in continuous lengths which can be supplied in full, cut down and supplied as sheets or further converted into finished products including poron sponge gaskets.  Poron sponge gaskets can take the form of strips, pads or intricately cut pieces of material placed between two surfaces to fill gaps and to create a low pressure seal preventing the leakage of liquids or gas and to seal against the intrusion of dust and debris when under compression.

Poron sponge creates gaskets which are high density and flexible designed to offer low outgassing, non-fogging and non-corrosive properties.  Poron gaskets can be cut from various grades of sponge from very soft that are easily compressible and offers enhanced sealability to the firmer grades which are able to manage high energy impact. There is also a slow recovery grade for applications that require a low closure force.

Why use Poron Sponge Rubber Gakets?

Poron gaskets have a smooth outer skin on both faces, offering a number of properties making them suitable for use as watertight seals, thermal insulators and to reduce vibration and noise, as well as being impact, chemical, heat, UV and Ozone resistant.  Poron sponge gaskets meet flammability standards UL-94HBF and MVSS 302 even without the need for flame retardant additives being used, they are also low outgassing and non-fogging which prevent them from becoming fragile over time and disintegrating, whilst also being non-corrosive towards parts or machinery as the material is formulated without the use of plasticisers or residual chemicals.

Benefits of Using Poron Sponge Rubber

    • Excellent compression set resistance
    • Temperature Range of -40 to +90 °C
    • Good chemical resistance
    • Flame Retardant to UL-94HBF and MVSS 302
    • non-corrosive
    • Easy to cut in gaskets in various grades

    Other Grades of Sponge Available

There are different types and grades of sponge rubber sheets available for use within many industries each with their own unique characteristics. Popular types of sponge rubber include:

EPDM sponge rubber is a high quality material with excellent weathering, UV and ozone resistance, making it ideal for outdoor sealing.  EPDM sponge rubber rolls offer a wide operating temperature range, acoustic, thermal and vibration dampening properties and also good mechanical strength and abrasion resistant properties.   Grades of EPDM include medium, firm, high temp and semi open cell.

Neoprene sponge rubber is a versatile material, featuring  good resilience and resistance to UV and ozone.  It has a working temperature range of -40ºc to +115ºc, good chemical stability, and good general resistance to oils and petroleum-based fuels.

Silicone sponge is a resilient material with high temperature stability, chemically inert and waterproof.   Silicone sponge is closed cell, available in a range of densities (firmness) it has a number of features which  make it suitable for outdoor sealing including Ozone, UV resistance and temperature flexibility, meaning it will not freeze/crack.

Viton sponge is another closed cell variety of sponge rubber offered by ASG.  It is manufactured with skin on both faces which increases its tear resistance.  It has a wide working temperature range of -25°C to +204°C and good resistance to hydrocarbons, oils, fuels, lubricants, acids, weathering and ozone.

PVC Nitrile  sponge is suitable for use as air, gas and watertight sealing, as thermal insulation and to reduce unwanted or excess vibration and noise, it is impact, heat, UV and Ozone resistant and flame retardant.

Industrial sponge rubber is a high quality, open cell natural sponge rubber.  The open cell structure enables excellent compression recovery, but also to form around uneven surfaces, limited absorption and circulation of gas and liquids if required.  It’s an excellent choice of material for us as protective sponge, expansion joints and anti-vibration applications.

Advantages of Using Poron Sponge Gaskets

Poron gaskets are cut from rolls of material which is strong, flexible and high quality, available in a number of pre-manufactured thicknesses.

Poron sponge gaskets offer an excellent compression set resistance, creating a durable product which allows for long -term repeated use.  These non-fogging and low out-gassing sponge gaskets contains no residual chemicals or plasticizers which means the gasket will not become brittle and disintegrate  - nor will it contaminate devices or corrode metals around it.

Poron sponge gaskets offer moisture, chemical, UV and Ozone resistant properties which prevents condensation, corrosion and the growth of bacteria, rot and fungus, has a working temperature range of -40°C to +90°C  and are also flame retardant to standards UL-94 HBF and MVSS 302.  As Poron is manufactured in roll form, it can easily be converted into  large or small gaskets often found used in anti-vibration applications, trims, glazing seals and within lighting.
