Poron Sponge Rubber Strip

Poron sponge rubber Strip

Poron Sponge Rubber Strip

Strips and tapes can be manufactured here at Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd using one of hundreds of materials types held in stock, from a number of worldwide material manufacturers and suppliers. Holding so many materials allows us to offer customers more choice when looking for suitable materials for their application, one of which includes Poron Sponge Rubber.  Poron sponge is manufactured at continuous roll lengths  in a range of thicknesses from 0.53 mm to 12.7 mm, with a skin finish on both faces from which strips can be cut.

Poron Sponge strips can also be called poron sponge strip, poron spong tape, poron gasket tape to name a few,  are all made to order, manufactured using one of our many machines including band saws, strippers, log cutters and even presses depending upon the size and quantity required - for very small strips in high volume runs, a kiss-cut option may also be available for faster production and time efficiency for the end user.

Our standard coils of poron strip are manufactured at 10 meters, but as the raw material is produced in lengths between 12.2m - 182.9m (depending on grade & thickness), we can make virtually any length up to these.  In-house production allows us to closely oversee the whole production process to ensure that we consistently produce high quality, competitively priced strips which can be manufactured with a range of finishes including foils, self adhesives or laminated with other materials.

What are Poron Sponge Rubber Strips?

Poron Sponge rubber strips or poron tapes are cut from rolls of continuous lengths of the material which is a closed cell microcellular urethane foam manufactured by casting and curing foamed urethane compound at various thicknesses.  These coils and strips of Poron sponge are flexible and high in density designed to offer low outgassing, non-fogging and non-corrosive properties suited for use in the production of gasket tapes and sealing strips which can also be used within vibration management applications.  Poron sponge strips are available in a range of grades, ranging from very soft that are easily compressible and offers enhanced sealability to the firmer grades which are able to manage high energy impact, there is also a slow recovery grade for applications that require a low closure force.

Why use Poron Sponge Rubber Strips?

Poron sponge is manufactured with a smooth outer skin on both faces, often used in a similar way to gaskets for sealing against moisture, dust and air,  offering a number of properties making the cut strips also suitable for use as a thermal insulator and to reduce vibration and noise, as well as being impact, chemical, heat, UV and Ozone resistant.

Poron sponge strips naturally meet flammability standards UL-94HBF and MVSS 302 without the need for flame retardant additives being used, it is also low outgassing and non-fogging which preventing the strips from becoming fragile over time and disintegrating, whilst also being non-corrosive towards parts or machinery as the material is formulated without the use of plasticisers or residual chemicals.

Benefits of Using Poron Sponge Rubber

    • Excellent compression set resistance
    • Temperature Range of -40 to +90 °C
    • Good chemical resistance
    • Flame Retardant to UL-94HBF and MVSS 302
    • non-corrosive
    • Easy to cut into various-sized strips

    Other Grades of Sponge Available

There are different types and grades of sponge rubber sheets available for use within many industries each with their own unique characteristics. Popular types of sponge rubber include:

EPDM sponge rubber is a high-quality material with excellent weathering, UV and ozone resistance, making it ideal for outdoor sealing.  EPDM sponge rubber rolls offer a wide operating temperature range, acoustic, thermal and vibration-dampening properties and also good mechanical strength and abrasion resistant properties.   Grades of EPDM include medium, firm, high temp and semi open cell.

Neoprene sponge rubber is a versatile material, featuring good resilience and resistance to UV and ozone.  It has a working temperature range of -40ºc to +115ºc, good chemical stability, and good general resistance to oils and petroleum-based fuels.

Silicone sponge is a resilient material with high temperature stability, chemically inert and waterproof.   Silicone sponge is closed cell, available in a range of densities (firmness) it has a number of features which make it suitable for outdoor sealing including Ozone, UV resistance and temperature flexibility, meaning it will not freeze/crack.

Viton sponge is another closed cell variety of sponge rubber offered by ASG.  It is manufactured with skin on both faces which increases its tear resistance.  It has a wide working temperature range of -25°C to +204°C and good resistance to hydrocarbons, oils, fuels, lubricants, acids, weathering and ozone.

PVC Nitrile sponge is suitable for use as air, gas and watertight sealing, as thermal insulation and to reduce unwanted or excess vibration and noise, it is impact, heat, UV and Ozone resistant and flame retardant.

Industrial sponge rubber is a high quality, open cell natural sponge rubber.  The open cell structure enables excellent compression recovery, but also to form around uneven surfaces, limited absorption and circulation of gas and liquids if required.  It’s an excellent choice of material for us as protective sponge, expansion joints and anti-vibration applications.

Advantages of Using Poron Sponge Rubber Strips

Poron sponge materials are manufactured in a range of roll sizes and thicknesses meaning strips can be cut to a multitude of sizes in varying widths and lengths.   Poron sponge strips offer an excellent compression set resistance, creating a durable product which allows for long-term use.  This non-fogging and low out-gassing sponge contains no residual chemicals or plasticizers which means the strips will not become brittle and disintegrate  - nor will they contaminate devices or corrode metals around it.  Poron sponge strips offer moisture, chemical, UV and Ozone resistant properties which prevents condensation, corrosion and the growth of bacteria, rot and fungus, they have a working temperature range of -40°C to +90°C  and are also flame retardant to standards UL-94 HBF and MVSS 302.  As Poron is manufactured in roll form of varying lengths, it can easily be converted into very small or longer length strips or tapes which can be found utilised as edge trims, glazing seals, anti-vibration components, automotive and lighting gasket tapes, etc.
