Poron Washers

Poron Washers

Poron Washers

Poron Sponge Washers are just one of thousands of products manufactured by ASG, with Poron material being one of hundreds of sponge and foam materials stocked from a number of worldwide material manufacturers and suppliers, allowing us to offer customers more choice when looking for suitable materials for their application.   Poron sponge is manufactured in continuous roll lengths  in a range of thicknesses from 0.53 mm to 12.7 mm, with a skin finish on both faces from which washers can be cut.

In-house production ensures that high standards are maintained, in turn producing high quality washers consistently.  Poron sponge washers are produced using drawings or dimensions provided by our customers, ensuring the final product is produced to their exact specification.

Depending on the size and quantity of the washers required, our production team will select from our range of atoms, autos, travelling head, kiss cut pressing machines or for very large or thick washers, we can programm our CNC (oscillating knife)  to produce the washers with a plain or self adhesive backed finish in the most efficient way to keep lead times and costs down.

    What are Poron Washers?

Washers are a flat ring, comprising of an Outer Diameter (OD), Internal Diameter (ID) and the thickness cut from materials in this case Poron.  Poron washers are placed between two  surfaces to fill gaps, creating a level surface, acting as a spacer or between nuts, bolts and other fastenings  to spread the pressure when tightened and ensure a secure fit.  Poron sponge rubber is a closed cell microcellular urethane foam manufactured by casting and curing foamed urethane compound at various thicknesses.  Poron sponge is a high density, flexible material designed to offer low outgassing, non-fogging and non-corrosive properties suited for use in the production of washers, seals and within vibration management applications.  Poron sponge  washers are available in a range of grades, these vary from very soft that are easily compressible and offer enhanced sealability to the firmer grades which are able to manage high energy impact. There is also a slow recovery grade for applications that require a low closure force.

    Why use Poron Washers?

Poron sponge is manufactured in continuous rolls with a smooth outer skin on both faces, offering a number of properties making the washers cut from the material suitable for use to create a watertight seal, as a thermal insulator and to reduce vibration and noise, as well as being impact, chemical, heat, UV and Ozone resistant.

Poron sponge washers meet flammability standards UL-94HBF and MVSS 302 even without the need for flame retardant additives being used, it is also low outgassing and non-fogging which prevents it from becoming fragile over time and disintegrating, whilst also being non-corrosive towards parts or machinery as the material is formulated without the use of plasticisers or residual chemicals.  Due to the vast number of excellent properties held by this materials, Poron washers an be found used in applications such as dust and water seals within lighting, automotive seals and washers within electronic devices.

Benefits of Using Poron Sponge Rubber

    • Excellent compression set resistance
    • Temperature Range of -40 to +90 °C
    • Good chemical resistance
    • Flame Retardant to UL-94HBF and MVSS 302
    • non-corrosive
    • Easy to fabricate and cut into numerous components

    Other Grades of Sponge Available

There are different types and grades of sponge rubber sheets available for use within many industries each with their own unique characteristics. Popular types of sponge rubber include:

EPDM sponge rubber is a high quality material with excellent weathering, UV and ozone resistance, making it ideal for outdoor sealing.  EPDM sponge rubber rolls offer a wide operating temperature range, acoustic, thermal and vibration dampening properties and also good mechanical strength and abrasion resistant properties.   Grades of EPDM include medium, firm, high temp and semi open cell.

Neoprene sponge rubber is a versatile material, featuring  good resilience and resistance to UV and ozone.  It has a working temperature range of -40ºc to +115ºc, good chemical stability, and good general resistance to oils and petroleum-based fuels.

Silicone sponge is a resilient material with high temperature stability, chemically inert and waterproof.   Silicone sponge is closed cell, available in a range of densities (firmness) it has a number of features which  make it suitable for outdoor sealing including Ozone, UV resistance and temperature flexibility, meaning it will not freeze/crack.

Viton sponge is another closed cell variety of sponge rubber offered by ASG.  It is manufactured with skin on both faces which increases its tear resistance.  It has a wide working temperature range of -25°C to +204°C and good resistance to hydrocarbons, oils, fuels, lubricants, acids, weathering and ozone.

PVC Nitrile sponge is suitable for use as air, gas and watertight sealing, as thermal insulation and to reduce unwanted or excess vibration and noise, it is impact, heat, UV and Ozone resistant and flame retardant.

Industrial sponge rubber is a high quality, open cell natural sponge rubber.  The open cell structure enables excellent compression recovery, but also to form around uneven surfaces, limited absorption and circulation of gas and liquids if required.  It’s an excellent choice of material for us as protective sponge, expansion joints and anti-vibration applications.

Advantages of Using poron Sponge Washers

Poron is manufactured in a number of roll sizes and grades, all of which can be used for washer conversion.  Poron sponge materials are a strong, flexible high quality material with a number of excellent properties, Poron sponge and components cut from these rolls of material offer an excellent compression set resistance, creating a durable product which allows for long -term use.  This non-fogging and low out-gassing foam contains no residual chemicals or plasticizers which means not only will the material not become brittle and disintegrate  - but it will also not contaminate devices or corrode metals around it.  Poron sponge rolls offer moisture, chemical, UV and Ozone resistant properties which prevents condensation, corrosion and the growth of bacteria, rot and fungus, has a working temperature range of -40°C to +90°C  and is also flame retardant to standards UL-94 HBF and MVSS 302.  As Poron is manufactured in roll form, it can easily be converted into small or large washers in any quantity. Poron sponge and washers cut from the material can be found used as trims, glazing seals, anti-vibration pads, automotive and lighting gaskets to name a few.
