Reconstituted Polyurethane Foam Strip

Using one of hundreds of materials sourced from across the world, strips and tapes can be manufactured on-site here at ASG.  By holding a selection of material in stock we are able to manufacture products for use in a range of applications  - one such material includes Reconstituted Polyurethane Foam.  Reconstituted Polyurethane foam is known by other names within the industry including ‘recon’ foam, crumb foam or chip foam, recognisable by its multi-coloured appearance and rough, fuzzy texture.  Reconstituted PU foam in its raw state is manufactured in very large master blocks or ‘buns’ usually around 2 metres x 1.5 metres in size and over 1 metre in height, which are held in stock ready to be carved and split into sheets or split and joined into rolls from which strip can be cut.

Recon foam strips can also be called recon spong tape, chip foam strip,  recon gasket tape to name a few,  are all made to order, manufactured using one of our many machines including band saws, strippers, log cutters and even presses depending upon the size and quantity required - for very small strips in high volume runs, a kiss-cut option may also be available for faster production and time efficiency for the end user.   Our standard coils  or recon tapes are manufactured at 10 meters in length, but as convert the raw material onsite, we can join sheets of material prior to stripping  therefore enabling us to make virtually any length.  In-house production allows us to closely oversee the whole production process to ensure that we consistently produce high quality, competitively priced strips which can be manufactured with a range of finishes including foils, self adhesives or laminated with other materials.

What are Reconstituted Polyurethane Foam Strips?

Chip foam or reconstituted Polyurethane (PU)  foam is a recycled material produced using a mixture of various grades of polyurethane foam off-cuts and trimmings which would have otherwise been discarded.   The mixture of discarded foam is fed through a large shredder which chips the material down into small  pieces,  which are then compressed and bonded together producing a huge multi-coloured block of material, which can be cut down into  sheets or used to convert into finished strips and tapes.  Recon from strips are often taken and  used in the same way as a gasket, whereby they are used to create a seal between uneven surfaces and fill irregularities, provide cushioning or dampen noise and vibration.

Our chip foam strips can be produced in long lengths of around 10 or 20 meters in coil form or for smaller strips, they can be cut using the bandsaw or produced using on of our many presses.  Manufacturing strips in-house even means we can not only make them in bespoke made to measure sizes, but also supply them in a plain or self adhesive backed finish and even laminate multiple types of material together to create bespoke and unique variations.

Why use Reconstituted Polyurethane Foam Strips?

Our customers often choose to take strips cut from reconstituted foam for a number of reasons - the material itself is affordable,  compact, highly resistant and most of all good for the environment as it is recycled and the material would have otherwise ended up in landfill sites!!!  Recon foam strips can be cut from rolls or sheets of material and be used in applications where there will be repeated use and impact such as seat cushions in pub benches, public transport, the production of gym mats and also in  packaging or noise and vibration reduction applications.

Reconstituted  foam pads are available in different weights, usually between 4lb and 14lb suited to varying levels of use.  Prior to cutting into strips, recon foam can be laminated with a choice of foils and self-adhesives applied to one or both faces.  For very thick strips or where a combination of properties are required, recon foam can be laminated together in layers or can be laminated to other materials for use within more specialist applications when composite materials are needed.

    Benefits of using Reconstituted Foam

    Available Grades of Polyurethane Foam

Advanced Seals & Gaskets work with a number of material manufacturers, giving our customers more choice when looking for polyurethane foam rolls, our most popular types being:

    • Acoustic
    • egg box
    • Pick & Pluck
    • HLB
    • Basotect
    • Polyester
    • Polyether
    • Retic

Advantages of Using Reconstituted Polyurethane Foam Strips

Reconstituted foam strips hold many excellent desirable properties that make them desirable to many of our customers.   These strips are cost-effective and eco-friendly as the raw material is made from recycled off-cuts which are used to produce the master blocks or ‘buns’ of foam.

Strips cut using Recon foam can often be used for cushioning, sound and vibration control in industries such as automotive, audio, sports and leisure, aerospace, marine, rail, and domestic manufacturing sectors.

Even though Reconstituted polyurethane is made using waste from a mixture of different types of PU foams, it can still be made in different weights or densities by adjusting how much the chips are compressed during production allowing it to be used in various applications.   Using our state of the art equipment and master buns of material,  we are able to produce strips in various lengths and thicknesses from just a few centimeters to up to 50 or even 100 meters long using log cutters, saws and presses, available in a plain finish or coated with a choice of foils and self adhesives.
