Silicone Sponge Fabrication

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd design and construct various fabricated components produced using a range of sponge materials.  The production of a fabrication often requires a combination of specialist machinery, usually a selection of saws, drills, buffers and knives, alongside the manual adhesion and construction of the finished product.

By choosing ASG for your silicone sponge  fabrications, you will benefit from the availability of our CNC oscillating knife, which can automatically cut and drill fabricated parts by reading CAD drawings.  Fabrications are often used as a cheaper alternative to mouldings and extrusions for production of bespoke shapes as there is no initial die or tooling cost, ideal for when 1 off prototypes or small quantity sample runs are needed.

All our silicone sponge rubber fabrications are made to order, produced using samples or drawings provided by customers, and can take many forms for including multiple material laminating to create composites sheets which can then be cut down into gaskets, washers, strip, displays and gaskets and seals with flexible joints or irregular angles.

    What are Silicone Sponge Fabrications?

A fabrication is a procedure used to turn silicone sponge rubber pieces or sheets of material into custom made 3D usable shapes and products.

Silicone Sponge Fabrications are created using CNC machines, saws, drills, buffers and glue, etc, enabling us to create unique products that can not be bought off the shelf,  usually, if a part can not be produced by one single process for example where the item is too big to be produced in one single piece, or where 3D profiles are required such as cubes or cone shapes.

Silicone rubber fabrications can be cut from sheets or rolls kept in stock, cut from laminated layers of sheet material and even made using a number of smaller cut parts joined together.

    Why use Silicone Sponge Fabrications?

Fabrications are often the preferred alternative to mouldings and extrusions as there is no initial die or tooling cost for production of bespoke shapes, these are ideal for use as samples or prototypes prior to paying for expensive tooling for mouldings or extrusions for bulk production.

Silicone sponge fabrications are also perfect for producing signs, packaging case/box insert, automotive applications, cookware (such as baking moulds), sportswear and equipment, etc...

Silicone sponges offer superior mechanical properties and many of the performance benefits of solid silicone, but in a softer and more conformable form, as it has excellent resistance to compress (bounce back to its original shape and thickness).  Silicone sponge also has a wide operating temperature range of around -60C to 260C, resistance to UV and ozone - therefore suitable for outdoor applications and in comparison to other sponge materials offer more strength and durability.

The closed-cell structure of this material means it will make excellent sealing components for the prevention of leaks or ingress of air, dust and water, even with fairly low levels of compression.

The Advantages of using Silicone Sponge Fabrications

There are many advantages to using silicone sponge fabrications in your applications as it is suited for use in a range of industries due its durable and rugged nature.

Silicone sponge is a closed-cell material which means it is water-resistant and can be used to create moisture tight sealing components.  Some of the other excellent properties include the materials wide operating temperature range of -60°C to 230°C, environmental resistant properties meaning it can withstand Ozone, UV and Corona Damage along with general weathering from rain, wind and frost etc where many other materials would become brittle and crack.

These excellent features make silicone sponge a great choice for sealing in outdoor applications such as within HVAC units, light and electrical enclosures when a tight water seal is vital.  Silicone sponge can be used in thermal insulation applications as well as for sealing and vibration dampening.
