Silicone Sponge Extrusion

Silicone Sponge Extrusion

Silicone Sponge Extrusion

ASG are one of the country’s largest cellular material converters and having a network of suppliers, are able to offer a multitude of materials, including the highest quality range of silicone sponges in various grades, colours and thicknesses and profiles.

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd can supply the highest quality silicone sponge extrusions manufactured in a host of profiles, from a simple length of cord, through to tubes and contoured forms. Silicone sponge rubber extrusions are designed to serve a number of purposes including surface or product protection, as a seal against air, gas, fluid and dust or to simply create an aesthetically pleasing edge trim or buffer.

All our solid rubber extrusions are made to order, manufactured using samples or drawings provided by our customers from which a tool or ‘die’ is made and a sample produced for approval prior to the final order being completed.

    What Are Silicone Sponge Extrusions?

An ‘Extrusion’ is where raw material, in this case silicone sponge compound is turned into a specific, usable shape using an extruder machine which works using high pressure and a die (a shaped tool). Raw material is pushed through the die creating the finished profile, in continuous lengths, with a consistent cross-sectional shape running throughout.

Silicone sponge rubber extrusions can be made as a ‘solid’ shape such as cord and square or rectangular sections, or ‘hollow’ tubes where a hole runs through the entire length of the extrusion just leaving the outer wall. Some of the most commonly used solid rubber extrusions are D-sections, P-sections, U-channels and cords, many of which can be supplied plain or with a self-adhesive finish.

Silicone (SI) sponge is an elastomeric material, expanded during the heat-curing stage, which in return creates the closed cell structured sponge, which is low toxicity and CFC free which makes it an environmentally friendly material. Silicone Sponge is a highly versatile material, which can be used in place of its solid rubber variant, where a softer, conformable and compressible material is needed, designed to offer exceptional sealing, cushioning, vibration insulation and insulation properties.

    Why Use Silicone Sponge Extrusions?

Silicone sponge extrusions can take many forms which can be found used within many applications for sealing against air, gas and liquid, cushioning against vibrations and rattles.

Extrusions are perfect for applications where off the shelf seals or gaskets will not always fit and a bespoke profile or shape is required and the quickest and simplest way to create lengths of identical products even when manufactured in bulk.

Silicone sponge extrusions offer the superior mechanical properties and many of the performance benefits of solid silicone, but in a softer and more conformable and compressible form.

Silicone sponge offer more strength and durability in comparison to other sponge materials, have excellent resistance to compression and recovery (bounce back to its original shape and thickness), a wide operating temperature range of around -60C to 260C, resistance to UV and ozone - therefore suitable for outdoor sealing applications.

The closed cell structure of this material means it will make excellent sealing components for the prevention of leaks or ingress of air, dus and water, even with fairly low levels of compression.

The Advantages of Using Silicone Sponge Extrusions

Extruded Silicone sponge profiles bring many advantages to users, and can be found utilised in many applications and throughout a range of industries due its durable and rugged nature and because of the huge number of profiles the material can be formed into.

Silicone sponge is a closed cell material which means it is water resistant and can be used to create moisture tight extruded seals. Some of the other excellent properties includes the materials wide operating temperature range of -60°C to 230°C, environmental resistant properties meaning it can withstand Ozone, UV and corona damage along with general weathering from rain, wind and frost etc where many other materials and rubbers can become brittle and crack.

These excellent features make silicone sponge a great choice for the production of extruded seals and insulation strips for use in many indoor or outdoor applications such as within HVAC units, light and electrical enclosures when a tight water seal is vital as well as for use in thermal insulation applications , as well as for sealing and vibration dampening.

There are a number of standard extruded profiles available off the shelf, but to ensure a perfect fit and a reliable seal or gasket - a bespoke profile can be made to order.
