Silicone Sponge Strip

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd are one of the UK’s largest producers and suppliers of cut strip, such as silicone sponge strip, made using a range of foams, sponges, rubber, plastics and even specialist papers.

One such material is Silicone Sponge, available in various grades, colours and thicknesses which can be converted into strips, sometimes also recognised as silicone foam tapes, silicone gasket strips or gasket tapes. Silicone sponge materials are manufactured in roll form for thicknesses up to 12.5mm and in sheet form for thicknesses above this and up to 45mm, with a skin finish on both faces from which strips can be pressed or cut.

Our Silicone Sponge strips are produced in-house, made to order, manufactured using one of our many machines including band saws, strippers, log cutters and even presses depending on the size and quantity required - for very small strips in high volume runs, a kiss-cut option may also be available for a quicker turnaround.

Silicone Sponge strips can be produced in thicknesses ranging from 1mm through to 45mm, and in any width from around 4mm. On-site production allows us to closely oversee the whole production process to ensure that we constantly produce high quality, competitively priced strips, supplied in a choice of finishes including foils, self adhesives or laminated with other materials

    What Are Silicone Sponge Strips?

Silicone Sponge strips are pieces of the material often cut to a specific width, in pre-cut lengths or continuous coils as requested by our customers. Silicone sponge strips are often used in a similar way to a gasket placed between two surfaces to create a seal, provide cushioning, anti-vibration or insulation. Silicone sponge strips can be placed between two surfaces to create a low pressure seal preventing the leakage of liquids or gas and to seal against the intrusion of dust and debris.

Silicone sponge is an elastomeric material, expanded during the heat-curing stage, which in return creates the closed cell structured sponge, which is low toxicity and CFC free which makes it an environmentally friendly material. Silicone Sponge is a highly versatile material, from which strips can be cut and used in place of its solid rubber variant, where a softer, conformable material is needed.

Manufacturing strips in-house means we can supply them in a plain or self adhesive backed finish and even laminate multiple types of material together to create bespoke and unique variations.

    Why Use Silicone Sponge Strip

Silicone sponge is often used for the production of strips as the material offers the superior mechanical properties and many of the performance benefits of solid silicone, but in a softer and more conformable form, as it has excellent resistance to compression (bounce back to its original shape and thickness)- perfect for the creation of gaskets which are used in sealing, cushioning and vibration dampening applications.

Silicone sponge strips have a wide operating temperature range of around -60°C to 260°C, resistance to UV and ozone - therefore suitable for outdoor applications and in comparison to other sponge materials offer more strength and durability.

The closed cell structure of this material means it will make excellent sealing components for the prevention of leaks or ingress of air, dus and water, even with fairly low levels of compression.

The Advantages of Silicone Sponge Strip

Strips and tapes converted using silicone sponge offer a number of desirable features and properties, used in many applications, throughout a range of industries, due its durable and rugged nature.

Silicone sponge is a closed cell material which means it is water resistant and can be used to create strips which can be used for gasketing, as moisture tight seals, cushioning, gap filling and anti-vibration. Some of the other excellent properties includes the material wide operating temperature range of -60°C to 230°C, environmental resistant properties meaning it can withstand Ozone, UV and corona damage along with general weathering from rain, wind and frost etc where many other materials and rubbers can become brittle and crack.

These excellent features make silicone sponge a great choice for strips for use as seals in outdoor applications such as within HVAC units, light and electrical enclosures when a tight water seal is vital. Silicone sponge is available in a range of standard thicknesses which make conversion turnaround times fairly quick, but with the option of having non-standard thicknesses split down and also laminated using a range of tapes or foils.
