Butyl Rubber Seals

By working with a number of manufacturers and suppliers, Advanced Seals & Gaskets are able to supply a diverse range of solid rubber seals, including those made using solid butyl rubber, also known as Isobutylene-isoprene (IIR).

ASG supply the highest quality solid butyl rubber seals taking the forms of gaskets, washers, O-rings, mouldings and extrusions, which are all designed for the purpose of preventing leaks or the ingress of air, fluids and gas, insulation and protection. All our seals are made to order and are produced using samples or drawings provided by customers to ensure the final product perfectly fits the application.

As each form of seal needs to be manufactured using a different process, ASG have invested heavily in various machinery meaning we can offer most seal types in high or low quantities.

What Are Solid Butyl Rubber Seals?

A ‘seal’ is a generic term for products which can take the form of cut gaskets, strips, washers, extruded or moulded profiles and edge trims. They are often used as a perfectly fitting gap filler between surfaces, acting as a separator or barrier to prevent liquids, particles or gases escaping or penetrating the application and in a number of vibration dampening, sealing and insulation applications.

Solid Butyl rubber is a synthetic rubber made up by blending isobutylene with isoprene, this creates a property known as Polyisobutylene, commonly known as PIB, which has an impermeable structure required for air retention or gas sealing applications, but is not recommended for use with petroleum, oils or chlorinated solvents.

Why Use Solid Butyl Rubber Seals?

Seals made using Solid butyl rubber are frequently used in demanding applications that involve high pressure gasses such as compressed air pipelines, air retention or high pressure vacuum sealing. Butyl rubber is known for its thermostable properties which partnered with the weather and ozone resistance make butyl it excellent for both internal and external use.

The material is flexible with good resistance to flex cracking, abrasion, impact and tear. Due to its low gas and vapor permeability, butyl rubber is an important material in the manufacturing of gas masks, within roofing construction, as vibration impending shock mounts, bushings, window seals and within hydraulics.

    Benefits Of Solid Butyl Rubber

    • UV & Ozone resistant
    • Impermeability To Gases, compressed air and moisture
    • Shock and anti-vibration properties
    • Wide operating temperature range
    • Excellent sealing properties
    • Flexible with resistance to Flex cracking, abrasionTear and impact

Advantages Of Using Solid Butyl Rubber Seals

Using seals manufactured from Solid butyl rubber brings a number of excellent properties, characteristics.

It’s a flexible material even at low temperatures with a wide operating temperature of -40°C to +140°C, and is pre-manufactured in a range of thicknesses ready for use as liners or for converting into gaskets and washers or moulded into pipes, o-rings and other sealing bespoke profiles. Solid Butyl resists degradation caused by UV, weathering , heat, moisture and some acids and alkaline chemicals.

It’s structure is impermeable to gas and compressed air, making it an excellent choice for air retention, therefore creating gas and air seals inner tubes, vacuum sealing, tubeless tyres, inner tubes, sports-ball bladders and in the production of gas masks. It can also be used for a range of indoor and outdoor waterproofing purposes such as pond/tank seals and liners or roofing fittings.
