Nitrile Rubber Fabrication

Nitrile Rubber Fabrication

Advanced Seals & Gaskets’ fabrication division produce and supply components using a range of solid rubber material, one of which is Nitrile Rubber.  A fabrication often requires a combination of specialist machinery, usually a selection of saws, drills, buffers and knives, alongside the manual adhesion and construction of the finished product. By choosing ASG for your fabrications, you will benefit from the availability of our CNC oscillating knife, which can automatically cut, drill and router fabricated parts by reading CAD drawings.

Fabrications are often used as a cheaper alternative to mouldings and extrusions for the production of bespoke shapes (as there is no initial die or tooling cost). Fabrications are ideal for when one off prototypes or small quantity runs are needed. All our Nitrile rubber fabrications are made to order, produced using samples or drawings provided by customers, and can take many forms including multiple material laminating to create composites sheets which can then be cut down into gaskets, washers, strip, displays & signage (such as logos or lettering) and seals with flexible joints or irregular angles.

What is Nitrile Rubber Fabrication?

Nitrile rubber is sometimes called  Nitrile butadiene or abbreviated to NBR rubber, which is a synthetic rubber produced from a copolymer of acrylonitrile (ACN) and butadiene. Nitrile rubber can be produced in different grades, and range of hardnesses from  40°- 70° shore (the shore hardness is measured using a shore durometer which indicates the level of resistance to indentation ,the higher number on the scale indicate a greater resistance - harder the material/lower number indicate less resistance- softer the material). A fabrication is the procedure used to turn the nitrile rubber pieces or sheets of material into custom made 3D usable shapes.

Why Use Solid Nitrile Rubber Fabrications?

When looking for bespoke profiles to fit specific applications, standard off the shelf products may not always be an exact fit, which could be dangerous if hazardous gasses or liquids are able to escape, or delicate machinery parts are fully covered - this is where fabrications can be used.

The processes involved in producing fabricated components means the customer gets a product in the exact shape and size required, which can be sawn or routed until the correct shape and size is achieved.

Fabrications are created using a combination of CNC machines, saws, drills, buffers etc, enabling us to create unique products that usually cannot not be produced by one single process for example where the item is too big to be produced in one single piece, or where 3D profiles are required such as cubes or cone shapes.

Different Grades of Solid Nitrile Rubber Available

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd have a network of material suppliers and manufacturers, meaning we have access to various grades of nitrile rubber which include:

(British Standard ) BS 2751 Nitrile is higher quality synthetic elastomer compared to commercial nitrile in terms of it’s improved elongation at break, tensile strength and resistance to a broader temperature range of -30°C up to +110°C. BS2751 nitrile is manufactured in shore hardnesses of 40° to 80 °.

Blue Metal detectable nitrile rubber is a synthetic elastomer which is manufactured with an additive visible to metal detector scanners. This grade of material has excellent tear and abrasion resistance, and is suitable for food, beverage and pharmaceutical applications as a way of detecting and reducing contamination.

Food Quality (FDA) Nitrile rubber is available in white or blue colour options, both conforming to  EC & FDA regulations, for use within food and pharmaceutical processing industries where the material needs to be resistant to vegetable oils, animal fats, fish oils and greases.

Benefits of Solid Nitrile Rubber

  • Water, mineral/oil, petrol, abrasion  resistance.
  • Can be formed into complex seals and extrusions or cut into bespoke parts
  • Available in various grades and hardnesses
  • Water Proof
  • Excellent sea against gasses
  • Excellent for automotive applications

The Advantages of Using Solid Nitrile Rubber Mouldings

Our customers will often opt for using fabrications constructed using solid nitrile rubber as the material brings many advantages, it is highly versatile and robust, combined with the high resistance to oils, gases, fuels, grease, water and most acids makes nitrile rubber highly sought after in many industries including automotive, construction, oil and aerospace.

Nitrile rubber fabrications are highly effective for  sealing, keeping out dust particles and hazardous gases.  It's a strong and durable material meaning it can be cut, sawn and buffed into a desired profile without the risk of tearing or stretching the material. Nitrile rubber fabrications are available in a range of grades and hardnesses (the shore hardness is measured using a shore durometer which indicates  the level of resistance to indentation ,the higher number on the scale indicate a greater resistance - harder the material/lower number indicate less resistance-softer the material).

Nitrile rubber has some flame retardancy, and a working temperature range of -20°C to +70℃, recognised by its resistance to ‘swell’ when exposed to oils and fuel, therefore holding its sealing capabilities making these rolls a popular choice for using in the production of parts used where oil resistance is required including fuel gaskets and seals, automotive seals, o-rings, casings, hoses and rollers for use within the printing industry.
