Nitrile Rubber

Solid rubber makes up a big part of the many materials offered by Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd, one type of which is solid nitrile rubber (NBR). This material is manufactured in roll form usually at 1.4mtrs wide x 10 meters long and in thicknesses starting from 1 mm. These rolls are stocked by ASG ready to be supplied in full roll lengths or cut down and converted into various other products such as sheets, gaskets, strips and washers, supplied with a plain or self-adhesive finish using our in-house laminating service.

Nitrile rubber is often taken in roll form as they give customers and  end users the flexibility to cover large surface areas with fewer joins and to be able to cut their own parts as and when they are required. Advanced Seals have their own in house state of the art conversion and lamination facilities consisting of slitters, log cutters, presses, bandsaws, kiss cut machines and our CNC oscillating knife, all of which are operated by fully trained staff who can use samples or drawings to produce parts to meet customers requirements.

What are Solid Nitrile Rubber Rolls?

Nitrile rubber is sometimes  also referred to as Nitrile butadiene or NBR rubber, which is a synthetic rubber produced from a copolymer of acrylonitrile (ACN) and butadiene.  Nitrile rubber is manufactured in rolls or continuous lengths of material which can be supplied as pre-cut parts or as a full roll. Nitrile rubber rolls can be produced in different grades, and range of hardnesses from 40°- 70° shore (the shore hardness is measured using a shore durometer which indicates  the level of resistance to indentation, the higher number on the scale indicate a greater resistance - harder the material/lower number indicate less resistance- softer the material).

Why Use Solid Nitrile Rubber Rolls?

Rolls of Solid nitrile rubber have many excellent properties and are available in different shore hardnesses and grades each suited to different industries and applications.

Nitrile rubber rolls are excellent for cutting into air, gas, dust and water tight seals, which have a good tensile strength, anti- abrasion properties and resistance to  petrol, mineral & vegetable oils and some acids and alkalis, the material also some flame retardancy, and a working temperature range of -20°C to +70℃.

Nitrile rubber is recognised by it’s resistance to ‘swell’ when exposed to oils and fuel, therefore holding its sealing capabilities making these rolls a popular choice for using to create automotive belting, oil seals within engines, hydraulics and flanges.

Different Grades of Solid Nitrile Rubber Available

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd have a network of material suppliers and manufacturers, meaning we have access to various grades of nitrile rubber which include:

(British Standard ) BS 2751 Nitrile is higher quality synthetic elastomer compared to commercial nitrile in terms of  it’s improved elongation at break, tensile strength and resistance to a broader temperature range of -30°C up to +110°C.  BS2751 nitrile is manufactured in shore hardnesses of 40° to 80°.

Blue Metal detectable nitrile rubber is a synthetic elastomer which is manufactured with an additive visible to metal detector scanners. This grade of material has excellent tear and abrasion resistance, and is suitable for food, beverage and pharmaceutical applications as a way of detecting and reducing contamination.

Food Quality (FDA) Nitrile rubber is available in white or blue colour options, both conforming to  EC & FDA regulations, for use within food and pharmaceutical processing industries where the material needs to be resistant to vegetable oils, animal fats, fish oils and greases.

    Benefits of Solid Nitrile Rubber

    • Water, mineral/oil, petrol, abrasion resistance.
    • Can be formed into complex seals and extrusions or cut into bespoke parts
    • Available in various grades and hardnesses
    • Water Proof
    • Excellent sea against gasses
    • Excellent for automotive applications

The Advantages of Using Solid Nitrile Rubber Rolls

Using rolls of solid nitrile rubber rolls brings many advantages, the material is highly versatile and robust, this matched with the high resistance to oils, gases, fuels, grease, water and most acids makes nitrile rubber highly sought after in many industries including automotive, construction, oil and aerospace. Nitrile rubber rolls and components cut from them are highly effective for sealing, keeping out dust particles and hazardous gases.

It's a strong and durable material meaning it can be easily cut into a desired profile without the risk of tearing or stretching the material. These rolls of material are ideal for the production of parts used where oil resistance is required including fuel gaskets and seals, automotive seals, even components for use within the printing industry. Using rolls when converting small components will help to reduce waste and enable customers to achieve a better yield (in comparison to cutting from sheets), its also allows for long strips or very large seals to be cut without the need for joining material.
