Static Dissipative Foam Pads

Static Dissipative Foam Pads

Static Dissipative Foam Pads

Pads can be cut from virtually any material stocked by Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd, including Polyethylenes in various grades, densities and colours each designed for use in many different applications.   One of the more specialist PE foam pads available from ASG are those cut from Static Dissipative Polyethylene, sometimes also referred to as Anti-static polyethylene. Static Dissipative PE foam is black in colour, manufactured in sheet and roll form in thicknesses up to around 100mm, from which pads can be cut,  allowing for a faster turn around and shorter lead times.

Our facilities house state of the art conversion and lamination machines allowing us to supply pads in any size and thicknesses  starting from just 1.5mm.   Regardless of the size and quantity of pads required, one of our many presses, bandsaws or CNC machines can be used to manufacture the final product, from one off samples to large batch runs, which depending on size can be supplied as loosely cut parts, or kiss-cut on rolls  where a high quantity is required or for use on fast paced assembly lines.   Our lamination facilities give our customers a choice of taking  their Static Dissipative Foam pads in a plain finish or with adhesive tape on one or both faces.

What are Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam Pads

Static Dissipative Polyethylene foam pads are cut from sheets or rolls of material.  As with most other polyethylene foam materials, these pads pieces of material  split from the master blocks or rolls to produce pre-measured thicknesses starting from just 1.5mm and then using either one of our many presses, saw or oscillating knife, can be converted into any sized pad.  Our sheets are usually supplied at 2 metres long by 1 metre wide or 1 metre by 1 metre as standard, but can be joined to produce larger pads of at non standard sizes.

Pads cut from Static Dissipative PE foam are just one type of ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) products available from Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd.  This material is a black in colour, closed cell polyethylene foam which is made using a combination of raw PE granules, conductive carbon, fillers and blowing agents which causes the material to foam prior to curing, creating the cellular structure within the material.   Static dissipative PE  from pads offer a static dissipative function which is permanent, and has a lower carbon content than conductive foam meaning anti static foam can be used and an alternative to static dissipative applications

Why use Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam Pads?

Pads cut using Static Dissipative PE foam are often used in more specialised packaging applications, where the pads are used to wrap items or line cases in which electronic components are to be transported which are static sensitive and would otherwise become unusable if stored or shipped within inadequate packaging or none at all.

As Electronic components all have a dielectric nature, electrostatic charging cannot be completely prevented during handling of devices or where sensitive components are connected  to a product creating ESD (Electrostatic discharge) which is a sudden surge of electric discharge between two electrically charged objects caused by contact or friction resulting in an electrical short or dielectric breakdown.

The most effective way to reduce the risk of ESD is to use pieces of material  such as pads made from materials such as Static Dissipative PE foam, which will slowly conduct or  ‘dissipate’ it, allowing the charges to flow to ground slower and in controlled manner, preventing discharge or shock to persons handling the divide or other objects nearby.

Benefits of Using Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam

    • Lightweight for lower transport costs
    • A soft material which offers cushioning
    • Slow and controlled dissipation of static electrical discharge
    • Reduces cost of replacing damaged items
    • Closed cell material protects goods from moisture damage
    • Can be used in roll or sheet form, or cut into bespoke case inserts from better fit

Advantages of Using Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam Pads

Static Dissipative foam pads offer a number of excellent features and advantages which not only result in cost savings for electrical device suppliers and manufacturers, but also maintain a safe environment and device protection.  Just a few of the properties demonstrated by static dissipative foam pads include excellent strength and tear resistance, high shock absorbency, resistance to chemicals such as solvents, acids and grease.  Being a closed cell material,  SD polyethylene foam sheets don’t support mould and bacteria growth or allow for moisture absorption, will not cause chemical corrosion to components or surrounding packaging and as with most rolls of Polyethylene foams, can withstand temperatures of up to 90℃.

Static Dissipative PE foam pads are available in many standard thicknesses, but our excellent conversion facilities means we can also can also split sheets and rolls down to non-standard thicknesses starting from as little as 1.5mm upon request prior to cutting them down into pads. Static Dissipative foam pads can be used as case inserts in order to fully secure and protect the products from movement, impact and most importantly damage from static charge, which in return saves customers and end-users money on having to replace damaged products.    Applications in which anti static polyethylene foam pads can be used include LCD screens on production lines of electrical devices such as mobile phones, laptops, computers, packaging and optic electronics.
