Plastazote Foam Gaskets

Plastazote Foam Gaskets

Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd pride itself on being able to work with a multitude of reputable material manufacturers and suppliers, enabling us to offer gaskets, such as plastazote foam gaskets, cut using a range of materials in many grades, densities and colours. Our more popular materials include various types of Polyethylene (PE) foam, one of which is Low-Density Plastazote foam in densities ranging from 15kg to 70kg (referred to as LD15, LD33, LD45, LD60 or LD70 respectively).

This material is a closed-cell, cross-linked polyethylene foam which is incredibly lightweight, and free from chemical agents which enable customers to use this material in highly sensitive environments.  Plastazote PE foam is manufactured and stocked in block form from which we can convert sheets and rolls of various thicknesses from which plastazote foam gaskets can be cut.

As our plastazote foam gaskets are produced in-house on state of the art machinery, we can manufacture bespoke items to match our customer's samples or drawings, from a simple rectangular picture frame gasket to a more complex shape with cut-outs - we can offer a solution.  Whether it’s a small sample batch or a multi-thousand run, we have a machine to quickly and accurately produce perfectly formed gaskets in a range of sizes, these include a number of presses, CNC and kiss-cut machines.

Our Plastazote foam gaskets can be produced plain or with a choice of finishes including foils, self-adhesives or laminated to other materials, depending on the size and quantity of the gasket, they can be supplied as loosely packed parts or kiss-cut on rolls.

What are Plastazote Foam Gaskets?

Plastazote foam is a cross-linked, closed-cell polyethylene foam, man-made using crude oil into which nitrogen is blown and the foam is expanded. This manufacturing process produces a tough and flexible material.  When the plastazote foam has compressed each nitrogen-filled cell acts like a balloon, causing the foam to bounce back to its original shape.

Being a closed-cell structure of plastazote means it is impenetrable to air and moisture and will not allow liquids to pass through or be absorbed making it an excellent choice for plastazote foam gaskets production. Plastazote foam Gaskets can come in the form of a strip or pad but are generally an intricately cut shaped piece of material placed between two surfaces to create a low-pressure seal preventing the leakage of liquids or gas and to seal against the intrusion of dust and debris when under compression.

Plastazote like other polyethylene foams are manufactured in a range of densities for use in different applications. The density of the foam is measured as the weight or mass of the foam across its entire volume or within a cubic meter (m3).  The denser the foam, the heavier and more compact the material is, this can have an effect on some of the properties of the material and how it performs.

    Why use Plastazote Foam Gaskets?

Plastazote foam is a very low-density foam that can be easily split, cut and shaped.  Even with such low density, it still offers excellent compression following compression and impact. It offers resistance to a range of chemicals, solvents, acids, alkalies and some oils, meaning it can be utilised in many applications.

All Plastazote materials are lightweight and free from chemical agents, therefore can be used in many ‘clean’ applications such as food, pharmaceutical and science.  Plastazote foam gaskets are used to fill gaps and irregularities between uneven surfaces and to provide a solution to unwanted rattles, noise, vibrations, to seal against air, gas, dust and liquids, and can also be used to cushion between moving parts to reduce friction and damage to components and equipment.

In order for a plastazote foam gaskets to work effectively, it needs to compress and fill the entire space to create pressure and an airtight protective seal.

Advantages of using Plastazote Foam Gaskets

Using plastazote foam offers countless advantages and is highly utilised in numerous industries and applications, plastazote foam is a man-made material, designed to suit a range of requirements and is available in a choice of grades, densities and colours to suit.  Plastazote foam gaskets are odourless, lightweight, buoyant, non-toxic and offer resistance to many oils, solvents, acids and alkalis.

Its closed-cell surface does not allow the absorption of liquids and is easy to keep clean, as well as being weatherproof and UV stable.  Plastazote foams are usually the preferred choice for protective packaging such as case inserts, but also popular for the production of plastazote foam gaskets as the material has excellent recovery from repetitive impact.

Using these materials for plastazote foam gaskets production offers customers cost-saving benefits as there is a reduction in damage to products and equipment.

Typical Applications for Plastazote Polyethylene foam:

Plastazote polyethylene foam is most commonly found used in packaging applications, being low density, plastazote can be easily cut and manipulated to fit around delicate or fragile products. Other plastazote foam gaskets applications can include:

    • Making costumes or props
    • Displays
    • Used in the manufacture of sports equipment
    • Water repellent and buoyant for use as floatation or buoyancy aids
    • Used for surface protection and components for medical and healthcare applications
    • Footwear lining
    • Electronics packaging
