Ethafoam Washers

Ethafoam Washers

Foam washers are manufactured here at Advanced Seals & Gaskets Ltd using materials from across the world.  Our extensive storage facilities enable us to stock  blocks (buns), rolls and sheets of polyethylene, in a range of densities and colours all ready to be converted into one of 1000’s of products including washers.    Ethafoam is just one of various types of Polyethylene Foams supplied and converted by us, and as with most other polyethylene materials are manufactured in block form,  which vary in size depending on the density and grade.

Ethafoam Polyethylene Washers can sometimes be referred to as Ethafoam Washers,  Jiffy foam washers or Stratocell washers.   As we offer an inhouse conversion and lamination service, we are able to not only split materials down to thicknesses starting at just 1.5mm, we can also laminate layers together creating  greater depths allowing us to produce very thick Ethafoam washers.  Ethafoam washers are all made to order, produced using dimensions, samples or drawings provided by our customers, ensuring the final product perfectly fits the application - even offering a small sample run if required.

Depending on the size and quantity of the Ethafoam washers required, our production team will select from our range of atoms, autos, travelling head presses, kiss cut pressing machines or for very large or thick washers, we can programme our CNC (oscillating knife) to produce the washers in the most efficient way to keep lead times down.  Ethafoam Polyethylene foam washers can be supplied in a plain finish or coated with self-adhesive backing.

What are Ethafoam Polyethylene Foam Washers?

Ethafoam washers are a flat ring, comprising of an Outer Diameter (OD), Internal Diameter (ID) and the thickness, cut from a sheet or roll of the raw material, which can then be placed between two surfaces in order to create a level surface, to act as a spacer or to be placed between a nut/bolt to spread the pressure when tightened.

Ethafoam washers can also be used  to create a low pressure seal preventing the leakage of liquids or gas and to seal against the intrusion of dust and debris when under compression.  Ethafoam is a resilient and flexible closed-cell polyethylene material, similar to polystyrene in appearance and feel, which has a range of uses due to its durability and flexibility.

Ethafoam is a low-density plastic foam made by expanding polyethylene by around 30 times in volume, which is manufactured or ‘extruded’ as blocks or planks so that it has skin on both faces which is textured, with exposed cell along the edges where it has been cut down to size.

Ethafoam washers are available in white or grey, and in different grades and densities such as 24kg/m2 and 64kg/m2 for packaging, 102kg/m2 and 145kg/m2 for high load bearing,  a Flame Retardant grade and Anti-static which is recognisable by its pink colouration.  Ethafoam washers are commonly found used within packaging applications due to its impact, shock absorption and cushioning properties and its resistance to moisture.

Why use Ethafoam Polyethylene Foam Washers?

Ethafoam washers can be cut from rolls or sheets of material in a choice of densities and grey or white colours options.   Ethafoam washers can provide protection from repeated impact, moisture, chemicals and mildew or fungus is required.    Ethafoam is a  material, which can be machined or fabricated into bespoke shapes including washers to perfectly fit its intended applications such as gap filling, cushioning, insulation or as a spacer between fittings.

As the  Ethafoam raw materials are manufactured in a number of grades and densities, the washers cut from them can be found used in a range of applications regardless of the weight placed on them.  When used with fragile or delicate items or those with a polished surface, it’s coarse nature may put the items at risk of abrasion therefore it is recommended another softer material is placed between the two layers.

Ethafoam washers can be used to fill gaps and irregularities between uneven surfaces, provide a solution to unwanted rattles, noise, vibrations, to seal against dust, they can also be used to cushion between moving parts and fittings to reduce friction and damage to components and equipment such as during transportation.

    Benefits of using Ethafoam Polyethylene:

    • Shock, impact and vibration absorption
    • Moisture resistant
    • Impervious to many chemicals, mould, fungus and bacteria
    • Easy to cut, carve and fabricate
    • Available in a range of densities
    • Lightweight

    Alternative Packaging Foams

    • Convoluted or Eggbox Polyurethane
    • Pick & pluck Polyurethane
    • Anti-static Polyethylene
    • Anti-static Polyurethane
    • Conductive Polyethylene
    • Plastazote foams
    • Static Dissipative Polyethylene Foam

Advantages of using Ethafoam Polyethylene Foam Washers

Ethafoam is manufactured and stocked in sheet or ‘plank’ form, but is highly machinable, it can easily be pressed and routered into bespoke washers.   Ethafoam Polyethylene washers are strong and lightweight with a skin finish which creates a moisture, mildew and bacteria resistant material.

This material is resilient therefore perfect for washers which need to withstand repeated impact, vibration and will insulate against high and low temperatures - offering a working temperature range of -30 to +80ºC and resistance to many chemicals.  The main advantages of Ethafoam washers are their durability, available in a choice of grey or white colours, a range of densities from 24kg/m3 to 145kg/m2 to be able to withstand even extreme weight and in specialist grades such as Flame Retardant and Anti-Static.

Ethafoam washers shock and vibration absorption levels can be increased by stacking or layering multiple pads together to create depth and cover larger surface areas.   Due to the vast choice of Ethafoam materials available, the washers cut from them can be found used in a range of applications from securing electrical appliances, white goods during transportation,  through to supporting very heavy objects such as ground cables or under machinery feet.
