Polyurethane Extrusion

Polyurethane Extrusion

For highly customized sealing or covering needs, like irregularly shaped spaces or unique product requirements, Polyurethane extrusion becomes essential.

We collaborate with a network of material suppliers and manufacturers, offering a wide range of Polyurethane extrusions, from straightforward to intricate designs.

Solid Polyurethane belongs to the synthetic polymer family and serves various industries due to its high-performance, abrasion resistance, and durability. Industrial-grade Polyurethane rubber, typically in 60° shore and 80° shore hardnesses, is readily available in translucent and black colors. Additional hardness options, ranging from 5 shore to 95 shore, can be ordered.

These solid Polyurethane rubber extrusions come in diverse formats, from simple cylindrical cords to complex contoured components, serving purposes like protection, sealing against air, fluid, or gas, and enhancing aesthetics as edge trims or buffers.

All our Polyurethane extrusions are bespoke, made-to-order items. They are manufactured based on samples or CAD file drawings, guiding the creation of a tool or 'die.' We produce a sample for your approval to ensure the final product fits perfectly.

    What are Solid Polyurethane Extrusion?

Solid Polyurethane is a highly durable synthetic rubber material known for its strength and exceptional abrasion resistance.

These rubber extrusions come in standard hardness levels of 60° shore and 80° shore, available in translucent and black colors. Custom hardness options, ranging from 5 shore to 95 shore, can be ordered to suit specific needs.

The "extrusion" process involves using an extruder machine, which operates under high pressure and utilizes a die (a shaped tool), to transform raw solid PU rubber into the desired shape. This results in continuous lengths of extruded rubber profiles that maintain a consistent cross-sectional shape as designed by the customer.

Extrusions can take the form of "solid" shapes like cords or "hollow" profiles with a central hole running through the entire length, leaving an outer wall. Common extrusion types include D-sections, P-sections, door seals, window seals, U-channels, and cords.

    Why use Solid Polyurethane Extrusion?

Polyurethane extrusions, in addition to their strength and durability, possess several valuable properties such as excellent resistance to aging, chemicals, oils, greases, and solvents.

Compared to other rubber materials, solid Polyurethane exhibits superior tear resistance, higher load-bearing capacity, effective energy absorption for sound and vibration control, and a reduced susceptibility to discoloration.

These extrusions provide a wide operating temperature range from -30°C to +80°C and can be produced in various hardness levels, colors, and shapes. They are a preferred choice when non-standard profiles are needed for specific applications.

The extrusion process ensures consistent product quality, making it ideal for high-volume production and assembly. It offers uniformity, which is crucial in industries requiring identical components.

A wide range of extrusion forms and profiles find applications in sealing against air, gas, and liquids, cushioning against vibrations and rattles, and providing surface protection.

Solid Polyurethane rubber extrusions are particularly suitable for situations where standard seals and gaskets won't suffice, and custom profiles or shapes are essential. They are also a convenient choice for producing consistent, identical products in bulk.

    Alternative Grades of Solid Rubber

Advanced Seals & Gaskets collaborates with a vast network of material manufacturers and suppliers, providing customers with extensive options for solid rubber. Our most sought-after grades include:

    1. Neoprene (CR): Neoprene is a highly favored solid rubber known for its versatility and is available in various stock thicknesses. It excels in applications exposed to grease, oil, acids, ozone, and even seawater.

    2. EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer): EPDM, another top choice, is ideal for outdoor use. This material resists water, UV radiation, ozone, weather conditions, abrasion, alkalines, ketones, and diluted acids.

    3. Nitrile (NBR) Rubber: Nitrile rubber is widely used in the automotive industry due to its compatibility with petroleum, oil, and grease.

    4. SBR (Styrene-butadiene Rubber): SBR is a cost-effective, commercial-grade rubber with excellent abrasion resistance, tensile strength, and low compression set. It may not be suitable for use with petrol and chemicals.

    5. Silicone (SI): Silicone is an exceptional electrical insulator that performs effectively across a broad temperature range. It withstands UV exposure, weathering, ozone, and moisture, and is available in various colors.

    6. Viton Rubber: Viton rubber is engineered for demanding applications involving harsh chemicals and high temperatures. It offers exceptional resistance to fluids, oils, acids, and petroleum-based liquids.

    Benefits of Using Polyurethane Extrusion

The type of solid rubber used will depend on the industry, environment and application it is going to be used in and what it will be exposed to.  Depending on material used, some of the benefits offered by solid polyurethane  rubber include:

    • Popular for automotive, electrical, industrial, medical, marine and construction
    • Operating Temperature Range: -30°C to +80°C
    • Variety of grades, colours, hardnesses available
    • Energy (vibration/sound) absorption
    • Resistance to oils, grease, chemicals, solvents, ageing, tearing  and abrasion
    • Lightweight and flexible

Advantages of Using Solid Polyurethane Extrusion

Solid Polyurethane extrusions provide numerous advantages, withstanding extreme temperatures, moisture, and abrasion. This lightweight, shock-absorbing, and durable material maintains integrity under heat and load.

It exhibits excellent oil resistance, making it ideal for exposure to lubricants. The high-temperature tolerance suits applications in extreme heat, like ovens and furnaces. In the automotive industry, Solid Polyurethane extrusions serve as hoses, engine mounts, seals, and gaskets.

Compared to rubber, Polyurethane is known for its longer lifespan, especially when subjected to constant stretching or stress. PU components use non-corrosive compounds, offer varying hardnesses and colors, and find application across diverse industries.
