Polyurethane Fabrication

Fabricated Polyurethane components are just one of many products converted at our excellent manufacturing facilities here at ASG, with many various materials fabricated and formed into a range of usable products - one of which being our Polyurethane Fabrication.

Solid Polyurethane is part of the synthetic polymer family and is a popular rubber found used in a range of industries, it’s a high performance rubber, abrasion resistant and extremely durable.  Standard industrial grade Polyurethane rubber is usually available from stock in 60° shore and 80° shore hardnesses and in translucent and black colour options, other hardnesses available to order range from 5 shore to 95 shore.

A Polyurethane Fabrication often requires a combination of specialist machinery, usually a selection of saws, drills, buffers and knives, alongside the manual adhesion and construction of the finished product.   By choosing ASG for your Solid Polyurethane rubber fabrications, you will also benefit from the availability of our CNC oscillating knife, which can automatically cut and drill fabricated parts by reading CAD drawings.

Polyurethane Fabrications are often used as a cheaper alternative to mouldings and extrusions for the production of bespoke shapes as there is no initial die or tooling cost, ideal for when one-off prototypes or small quantity runs are needed.  All our solid polyurethane rubber fabrications are made to order, produced using samples or drawings provided by customers, and can take many forms including multiple material laminating to create composites sheets which can then be cut down into gaskets, washers, strips, displays & signage (such as logos/lettering) and seals with flexible joints or irregular angles.

    What are Solid Polyurethane Fabrications?

A Polyurethane Fabrication is the result of various processes and procedures used to turn  solid commercial rubber pieces or sheets of material into custom made 3D usable shapes.

Fabrications can be created using a combination of CNC machines, saws, drills, buffers, glues etc, enabling us to create unique products that usually cannot not be produced by one single process for example  where the item is too big to be produced in one single piece, or where 3D profiles are required such as cubes or cone shapes.  Solid Polyurethane is an extremely durable synthetic rubber material offering strength and abrasion resistance.

    Why use Solid Polyurethane Fabrication?

When a Polyurethane Fabrication is made, the component offers strength and durability, good ageing, chemical, oil, grease  and solvent resistance.   Solid Polyurethane in comparison to other rubber materials, has a higher tear resistance, better high load bearing capabilities, energy absorption - sound and vibration and does not discolour as easily.

Solid Polyurethane offers a working temperature range of -30°C to +80°C, and can not only be made using PU rubber in a wide range of hardnesses from 5 to 95 shore, but also using a combination of different materials.

Solid PU rubber Fabrications are often used as a cheaper alternative to mouldings and extrusions as there is no initial die/tooling cost for production of bespoke shapes, these are ideal for use as samples or prototypes prior to paying for expensive tooling for mouldings or extrusions for bulk production.  They are also perfect for producing props, signs, displays, packaging case/box inserts with routered-out cut outs, shaped to hold specific items in place and sleeves.

    Alternative Grades of Solid Rubber

Advanced Seals & Gaskets work with a wide network of material manufacturers and suppliers, giving our customers more choice when looking for solid rubber, our most popular grades include:

    • Neoprene (CR) is one of our most popular solid rubber materials, with various thicknesses  held in stock.  Neoprene is suitable for use where there is exposure to grease, oil, acids, ozone and even sea water.
    • EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) another very popular solid rubber is great for use in outdoor applications.  This material is resistant to water, UV, ozone, weather, abrasion, alkalines, ketones and diluted acids.
    • Nitrile (NBR) rubber is a popular solid material for use within the automotive industry where there is contact with petroleum, oil and grease.
    • SBR (Styrene-butadiene rubber) is a cost effective, commercial grade, general purpose rubber with good abrasion resistance, tensile strength and low compression set. (not sure use with petrol and chemicals).
    • Silicone (SI) is an excellent electrical insulation material which can operate at high and low temperatures.   Silicone rubber performs well when exposed to UV, weathering, ozone and moisture, and is available in a range of colours.
    • Viton rubber materials are manufactured for more demanding applications where there are harsh chemicals and high temperatures present.  Viton rubber offers resistance to fluids, oils, acids and petroleum based liquids.

    Benefits of Using Solid Polyurethane

The type of solid rubber used will depend on the industry, environment and application it is going to be used in and what it will be exposed to.  Depending on the material used, some of the benefits offered by solid polyurethane rubber include:

    • Popular for automotive, electrical, industrial, medical, marine and construction
    • Operating Temperature Range: -30°C to +80°C
    • Variety of grades, colours, hardnesses available
    • Energy (vibration/sound) absorption
    • Resistance to oils, grease, chemicals, solvents, ageing, tearing  and abrasion
    • Lightweight and flexible

Advantages of using Solid Polyurethane Fabrications

Fabrications constructed using Solid Polyurethane rubber offer users a number of advantages, the material can withstand a wide range of extreme temperatures, abrasion and moisture to name but a few.  It is also lightweight and shock absorbing, durable and flexible, maintaining its physical integrity under extreme heat and load bearing.

Solid PU has excellent oil-resistant qualities that are useful for exposure to oils or other lubricants.  The high temperature resistance makes Solid Polyurethane Fabrications popular for use in applications where there is extreme heat such as ovens and furnaces.  All of the above features also make Solid PU moulded parts widely utilised within the automotive industry used as hoses, bearing pads, engine mounts, seals and gaskets.

Polyurethane rubber is generally knows to last longer than rubber, especially in applications where it’s constantly stretched or otherwise exposed to stress, PU components are manufactured using a non-corrosive compound, available in in a choice of hardnesses and colours and due to the manufacturing techniques used in the production of the materials and parts, it is found utilised across a range of industries and applications.
